OverviewThe Transport Engineer will support large-scale wireless network build initiatives, including spectrum upgrades, equipment swaps, and new site deployments. While a strong technical foundation is important, this role also involves substantial administrative and coordination responsibilities. Key tasks include managing workflow processes, extracting and evaluating data, processing ASRs, and coordinating with telecom vendors. The position also requires creating IP/port assignments, building network pathways within management systems, and collaborating with internal and external teams through project completion.
This role sits within the transport engineering organization but frequently overlaps with equipment engineering functions. Responsibilities include reviewing RFDS documents, cross-referencing work orders, and managing updates through workflow tools that incorporate photos and descriptions. The workload is high-volume and detail-oriented.
Primary Responsibilities- Develop monthly interconnect implementation plans supporting macro, in-building, small cell, self-perform/third-party, ODAS, equipment swaps, 5G, CRAN, VRAN, and MEC build targets.
- Create, design, and issue CIQs (IP/port assignments) for new cells, trunks, switch growth, circuit ordering, and carrier additions.
- Understand telecom transport products such as native Ethernet, wavelength services, and dark fiber, as well as IOF and OSP provisioning processes.
- Manage a large portfolio of projects, evaluating optimal solutions and coordinating activities across multiple engineering teams.
- Place circuit orders with local exchange carriers for services such as dark fiber, Ethernet, and transport links.
- Document transport circuits and paths using network management systems.
- Track and escalate circuit orders to ensure timely delivery.
- Plan, design, and implement transport technologies supporting 5G rollout.
- Participate in project update meetings and present status reports.
- Manage vendors to meet network milestones and turn-up dates.
- Collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams to deliver optimal transport solutions.
- Create and maintain project trackers to improve data integrity, prioritization, and workflow.
- Align equipment growth projects with forecasted demand.
- Perform IP provisioning and maintain accurate database records for segments, paths, and circuit inventory.
- Support performance and bandwidth planning, router configuration, and design updates.
Top Required Skills- Strong understanding of telecommunications transport workflows, especially updating and maintaining network management systems for circuit inventory and provisioning.
- 5+ years of experience coordinating internal and external teams for transport, circuit, and equipment engineering deployments.
- Experience with site prioritization, logistics, materials delivery, and invoice/PO tracking.
Additional Skills & Qualifications- Proficiency with office applications including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Google Sheets, and Google Docs.
- Strong database management, project tracking, and logical analysis skills.
- Advanced troubleshooting, problem-solving, project management, and interpersonal communication abilities.
- Ability to quickly learn new technologies and apply wireless engineering concepts.
- Self-motivated, proactive, and capable of working independently.
- Strong organizational and planning skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks in a dynamic environment.
- Experience with engineering principles and economic analysis.
- Background in cellular or telecommunications industries.
- Strong decision-making skills using available data and anticipating future needs.
Desired Qualifications- Degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.
- Working knowledge of ASR ordering systems.
- Understanding of interconnect circuit types and features (e.g., TLS, EMUX, dark fiber, Ethernet services).
- Knowledge of 4G and 5G wireless architecture, including 3GPP standards.
- Project management experience.
- Familiarity with centralized RAN and urban interconnect environments.
- Knowledge of wavelength-division multiplexing technologies.
- Understanding of IPv4/IPv6 addressing.
- Experience with licensed and unlicensed microwave backhaul technologies.
