 Job Summary
We are seeking a Teaching Assistant to support the Education Department within a juvenile correctional facility.
The Teaching Assistant will supervise students in the classroom when the classroom teacher is absent. Responsibilities include taking attendance, monitoring student behavior, tracking assignments and daily records, providing guidance to students, and supporting classroom instruction.
The position reports directly to the School Principal and requires the ability to work independently while maintaining a safe, positive, and productive learning environment.
Key Responsibilities
  • Supervise students in the classroom in the absence of the classroom teacher.
  • Take and maintain accurate student attendance.
  • Monitor student behavior and maintain appropriate classroom expectations.
  • Monitor assignments and daily student records.
  • Follow daily and weekly teacher lesson plans.
  • Provide students with guidance and assistance in completing assigned work.
  • Support classroom instruction and educational activities as needed.
  • Evaluate student achievement and progress toward learning objectives.
  • Maintain a positive learning environment that supports student growth and development.
  • Follow established policies and procedures during critical incidents.
  • Maintain confidentiality of student and departmental information.
  • Operate job-related equipment as required.
  • Collaborate with other departments to enhance the educational environment.
  • Prepare written reports and participate in multidisciplinary treatment team meetings.
  • Develop and maintain accurate reports in accordance with departmental policies and procedures.
  • Maintain positive working relationships with students, staff, contractors, interns, volunteers, and applicable community agencies.
  • Attend and successfully complete all required training and certifications.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
  • High School Diploma required.
  • Ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to implement daily and weekly teacher lesson plans and support course objectives in the absence of an educator.
  • Ability to create and maintain a positive learning environment conducive to student growth and development.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Ability to accept supervision and constructive feedback.
  • Ability to successfully complete all required training and certifications.
  • Ability to meet required drug-screening requirements.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Substitute teaching permit preferred.
  • Previous experience working with students in an educational setting preferred.
  • Experience working in a classroom, school, youth services, or similar environment is a plus.
Work Environment
This is an onsite position located within a juvenile correctional facility. The successful candidate must be comfortable supervising students in this environment and following all facility, education department, and safety procedures.
Schedule
  • Monday–Friday
  • 7:30 AM–3:30 PM
  • 37.5 hours per week
  • 30-minute unpaid lunch
Training
Onsite training may take up to 3 weeks after the candidate starts.
If the selected candidate does not already have a substitute teaching permit, they will be required to obtain one during the training period. The candidate is responsible for the $35 permit fee.
Background & Onboarding Requirements
Selected candidates must successfully complete all required CAI and DOC background and onboarding requirements, which may include:
  • Drug screening
  • TB test
  • DCS check
  • Fingerprinting
  • CAI background check
  • DOC background check
  • Other required new-hire onboarding requirements
All onboarding requirements must be cleared before the candidate can begin work.
Interview Process
Candidates selected for an interview will initially participate in a phone screening with the Principal and/or DOE.
Candidates who advance may be invited for an onsite interview, which may include:
  • Facility tour
  • Classroom observation
  • Shadowing a teacher
  • Additional evaluation as determined by the school
If selected to proceed, the candidate's driver's license will be copied onsite as part of internal employment eligibility procedures.
Important Candidate Requirements
  • Must be willing to work onsite at a juvenile correctional facility.
  • Must be comfortable supervising students in the absence of the classroom teacher.
  • Must be available Monday–Friday, 7:30 AM–3:30 PM.
  • Must successfully complete required background checks, drug screening, TB testing, DCS check, and fingerprinting.
  • Must complete all required onboarding before starting.
  • Must obtain a substitute teaching permit after starting if one is not already held.
  • Must be willing to complete up to 3 weeks of onsite training.
