Controls Engineer III
Pay Rate Range: $60.00 - 65.00/hr (DOE)
Employment Type: Contract (12 Months+, Potential Extension)
Schedule: Monday - Friday, 40 Hours/Week (flexibility required during installations and start-ups)
Location: Charlotte, NC 28216 (100% Onsite)
Travel: Up to 50% travel to Hickory and Wilmington, NC facilities as needed

Tekberry is looking for an experienced
Controls Engineer III to support automation, capital expansion, and manufacturing process improvement projects for our client. This role will focus on the design, implementation, startup, commissioning, and optimization of Rockwell-based automation systems supporting advanced manufacturing operations.
Tekberry offers a $100 payment for referrals! Position Summary The Controls Engineer III will serve as the lead controls engineering resource on manufacturing automation and capital projects. This position is responsible for designing, programming, troubleshooting, commissioning, and supporting PLC-based manufacturing systems while collaborating with multidisciplinary engineering teams and external integrators.
Key Responsibilities - Lead controls engineering activities from concept development through installation, startup, and commissioning
- Design, develop, and deploy integrated automation and machine control systems
- Define controls architecture, system requirements, and integration strategies
- Program and support PLC, HMI, SCADA, and machine automation systems
- Provide technical direction to contractors, system integrators, machine builders, and project teams
- Review and approve electrical schematics, panel layouts, PLC programs, HMI applications, and network architectures
- Troubleshoot controls, networking, automation, and system integration issues
- Support startup, commissioning, training, and technology transfer to plant operations teams
- Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, facilities, IT, operations, and manufacturing teams
- Support manufacturing process improvement and capital expansion initiatives
- Travel to Corning facilities and vendor locations as required for project execution and equipment acceptance testing
Required Qualifications Education - Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering or related technical field
Experience - 7+ years of Controls Engineering experience in manufacturing or industrial automation environments
Technical Skills - PLC programming experience, primarily Rockwell platforms
- HMI and SCADA development experience
- Experience with:
- FactoryTalk View
- FactoryTalk Optix
- Ignition
- Strong understanding of PID control implementation
- Experience designing and deploying machine automation and motion control systems
- Electrical panel layout and schematic design experience
- AutoCAD and/or AutoCAD Electrical proficiency
- Experience with:
- Ladder Logic
- Function Block Programming
- Structured Text
- Sequential Flow Charts
- Understanding of industrial communication protocols including:
- Knowledge of machine safety design principles (ISO 13849-1 & 2)
- Strong troubleshooting and system testing experience
Preferred Qualifications - Experience supporting large-scale manufacturing automation projects
- Experience managing external machine builders and system integrators
- Capital project execution experience
- Startup and commissioning experience in high-volume manufacturing environments
- Advanced knowledge of industrial networking and controls architecture
- Experience supporting multiple manufacturing facilities and equipment deployments
Work Environment - Advanced manufacturing and industrial production facilities
- Frequent interaction with engineering, operations, facilities, and automation teams
- Hands-on equipment startup, commissioning, and troubleshooting
- Travel to North Carolina manufacturing sites and occasional supplier locations
- May require weekends, holidays, and extended workdays during installations and startup activities
Interview Process - 30-minute Teams interview
- 60-minute panel interview
