Job Overview and Responsibilities

The Associate Support Engineer is responsible for assisting with the operation of Data Centers and other Critical Facilities. Must be flexible and willing to work any shift in a 24x7 operation including off-shift, weekends and holidays. Responsible for maintaining accurate asset inventory and documentation within the organization's Data Center Infrastructure Management (DCIM) platform. Additional duties include data center operations, facilities operations, project implementations, and technical troubleshooting. Assists engineers with installation, testing, evaluation, and support of various IT hardware and infrastructure components. Provides direct technical support for data center problems, incidents, and changes. Provides onsite data center escort and oversight to support vendors and IT employees. Ensures data center high availability and uptime to meet enterprise objectives through monitoring, timely service restoration, and tuning.

This role requires a strong work ethic, excellent organizational and communication skills, and some technical work experience. The position requires valuing individual differences in people and creating an environment of learning, valuing, encouraging, and supporting differences. This operational support position is designed to develop knowledge of United's data center operations, best practices, processes, and functions with oversight and mentoring from data center engineers and leaders.

  • Data Center Logistics:
    • Responsible for maintaining accurate asset inventory and documentation within the organization's Data Center Infrastructure Management (DCIM) platform; this includes performing equipment audits, recording hardware installations, moves, additions, and decommissions, updating rack elevations, cabinet layouts, cable connectivity, power assignments, and ensuring all asset records remain current and accurate
    • Strong attention to detail and accurate data entry skills are essential to maintain inventory integrity, support capacity planning, and provide reliable operational reporting
    • Assist with inventory management, purchasing processes, shipping and receiving, warehousing, asset tagging, and logistics reporting to support efficient data center operations.
  • Data Center Operations:
    • Assure continuous uptime of Data Centers and critical facilities supporting IT and facilities operations
    • Support and assist with data center and facilities maintenance, repairs, incidents, changes and projects
    • Monitor critical systems and report as needed
    • Provide escort and assistance to United Engineering Teams and/or supporting vendors to troubleshoot and repair Infrastructure and IT systems
    • Assist with root cause analysis to quickly recover from service interruptions, and to prevent recurring problems
    • Provide routine building and system checks, campus maintenance and cleanup as needed
  • Data Center Maintenance:
    • Learn and apply data center standards and best practice
    • Learn practical applications of preventative and corrective maintenance for mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and other infrastructure systems
    • Assist with escorting and overseeing routine preventative maintenance (PM's) and repairs performed by United personnel and approved vendors
    • Assure maintenance and repairs are following prescribed activities and following United's safety and operational processes
    • Report any concerns or variations found to the appropriate team.
    • Complete and return documentation related to maintenance or repairs activities and follow up on any deficiencies found

Qualifications

What's needed to succeed (Minimum Qualifications):

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • 0-1 year of experience working in IT related infrastructure, facilities maintenance, telecommunications, end-user support or other critical infrastructure experience
  • Strong technical aptitude and ability to learn new technologies
  • Able to collaborate cross-functionally with other teams to provide successful outcomes
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to communicate solutions to both technical and non-technical audiences
  • Aptitude for problem solving; looking beyond the obvious and not stopping at the first answer
  • Strong level of poise in high pressure environments
  • Active commitment to self-development
  • Experience with data entry and auditing
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer without sponsorship
  • Successful completion of interview required to meet job qualification
  • Reliable, punctual attendance is an essential function of the position

What will help you propel from the pack (Preferred Qualifications):

  • Bachelor's degree or related experience
  • Associate or bachelor's degree in information technology, Computer Science or equivalent IT experience
  • Able to safely operate a pallet jack, or other material handling equipment
  • Experience in MS Excel
  • Related critical facilities infrastructure education or background
  • Certification in Low Voltage Communications
  • Electrical, mechanical or other facility related certifications
  • 1-3 years' work experience in a data center or other critical facility operation.
  • Electrical, mechanical, IT infrastructure or other technical work experience
