Job Description:
Senior Data Engineer (No sponsorship available)

Location: Lemont, Illinois (Partial Remote)

Role Overview

Our organization is seeking a senior-level Data Engineer who combines strong SQL and data architecture skills with business analysis, process discovery, and stakeholder management capabilities. The primary objective is business continuity. This individual will work closely with leadership to reverse engineer critical reporting processes, document institutional knowledge, reduce single-person dependencies, and establish sustainable operating procedures for the Sponsored Research and Intellectual Property data function.

Key Responsibilities
  • Reverse engineer existing SQL queries and reporting processes.
  • Analyze database schemas, table relationships, dependencies, and reporting logic.
  • Document source systems, data lineage, and reporting workflows.
  • Develop comprehensive Standard Operating Procedures for reporting processes.
  • Create onboarding and succession planning documentation.
  • Work directly with business users, analysts, and leadership.
  • Translate technical findings into business-friendly documentation.
  • Create data flow diagrams and process flow maps.
Required Qualifications

Experience: 7+ years of experience in Data Engineering, Data Development, Database Engineering, or Technical Business Analysis.

Technical Skills:
  • Expert-level SQL development and query optimization.
  • Experience reverse engineering legacy applications and databases.
  • Strong understanding of relational database design, data modeling, database schemas, data lineage, ETL/ELT concepts, and reporting architectures.
  • Ability to create technical documentation, process maps, and architectural diagrams.
  • Experience analyzing on-premises enterprise applications.


Business Analysis Skills:
  • Process mapping and process improvement experience.
  • Requirements gathering and stakeholder interviewing.
  • SOP development and operational documentation.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience supporting research, grants, contracts, intellectual property, or higher education organizations.
  • Experience with Sponsored Research systems.
  • Experience with Pearl (InfoEd) or similar research administration platforms.
  • Familiarity with data governance frameworks.
  • Experience developing automation roadmaps or business continuity assessments.
