Summary

Job Summary

General Atomics Electromagnetic Systems (GA-EMS) designs and manufactures first-of-a-kind electromagnetic and electric power generation systems. GA-EMS' expanding portfolio of specialized products and integrated system solutions support critical fleet, space systems and satellites, missile defense, power and energy, and process and monitoring applications for defense, industrial, and commercial customers worldwide.

General Atomics is seeking a highly experienced and motivated Satellite EMI/EMC Engineer to join our Space Systems group. Reporting to the Space Systems Electrical Engineering Manager, the successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) and managing electromagnetic interference (EMI) risks in the design, development, and testing of advanced satellite systems. This role is critical to ensuring the performance, reliability, and compliance of satellite systems with industry and government standards. Working alongside a team of expert engineers, the candidate will play a key role in supporting the development and engineering of cutting-edge satellite and space systems, advanced sensors, high-energy lasers, and other innovative technologies within GA-EMS's expanding portfolio.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Lead the design, analysis, and testing of satellite systems to ensure compliance with EMI/EMC requirements across all mission phases.
  • Develop and implement EMI/EMC control plans, including grounding, shielding, filtering, and bonding strategies.
  • Perform electromagnetic interference and compatibility analyses, including radiated and conducted emissions and susceptibility testing.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to identify and mitigate EMI/EMC risks during design, integration, and testing phases.
  • Conduct reviews of requirements, design, and test procedures to ensure compliance with industry standards (e.g., MIL-STD-461, MIL-STD-464, NASA-STD-4003).
  • Support the integration and testing of satellite subsystems and payloads, including the development of EMI/EMC test plans, procedures, and execution in laboratory and flight environments.
  • Provide technical leadership during EMI/EMC troubleshooting and resolution efforts, including root cause analysis and corrective action implementation.
  • Develop and maintain technical documentation, including EMI/EMC analyses, test reports, and compliance certifications.
  • Stay current on industry trends, emerging technologies, and advancements in EMI/EMC mitigation techniques, and proactively identify opportunities for innovation.
  • Function in an advisory or leadership role for a project/program and provide planning, direction, and oversight to less experienced professional staff or teams in technical efforts involving EMI/EMC engineering for space-based electronics and sensors.
  • Represent the company as a prime technical contact on EMI/EMC-related contracts and/or projects and interact with senior external personnel on technical matters requiring coordination between organizations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned or required.

We recognize and appreciate the value and contributions of individuals with diverse backgrounds and experiences and welcome all qualified individuals to apply.

May substitute equivalent engineering experience in lieu of education.
Required Experience:
  • Proven expertise in EMI/EMC engineering for satellite systems, including analysis, design, and testing.
  • Familiarity with industry standards and guidelines such as MIL-STD-461, MIL-STD-464, NASA-STD-4003, and FCC regulations.
  • Experience with EMI/EMC simulation tools (e.g., CST Studio Suite, Ansys HFSS) and test equipment such as spectrum analyzers, network analyzers, and EMI receivers.
  • Demonstrated ability to guide designs through development, integration, and production phases while ensuring compliance with EMI/EMC requirements.
Desired Skills:
  • Experience with PCB design tools (e.g., Altium, PADS) and circuit simulation tools (e.g., SPICE).
  • Proficiency in signal and power integrity analysis tools (e.g., HyperLynx, Ansys SI tools).
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to develop innovative solutions to complex EMI/EMC challenges.
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills to effectively interface with other departments, customers, government representatives, and professionals.
  • Capable of representing the organization as a prime technical contact and providing technical leadership on EMI/EMC-related issues.
  • Ability to formulate plans based on the development of innovative designs to resolve advanced technical engineering problems.
Additional:
