Job Description:

We are seeking a Senior Data Analyst to join our Rockies region team on a contract basis, providing dedicated analytical support to the Drilling & Completions (D&C) organization. This is a strategic role embedded within operations, where you will transform raw data into actionable insights that drive operational efficiency, well delivery performance, and capital optimization.

The ideal candidate will become a trusted data partner to D&C leadership, engineers, and field personnel, delivering high-quality analytics, dashboards, and automated solutions that directly impact business outcomes. This role requires a seasoned professional who can work independently, solve complex problems, and communicate findings effectively at all levels, including executive management.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Data Analysis & Insights

Extract, analyze, and interpret complex datasets to derive insights that drive strategic business decisions. Develop and maintain SQL queries against enterprise data systems (OXYODS, OpenWells, operational databases) to support D&C reporting and analysis. Perform detailed analysis of drilling and completions performance, timelines, costs, and operational KPIs. Translate technical findings into actionable business insights and recommendations.

Dashboard Development & Visualization

Build, enhance, and manage Power BI and/or Spotfire dashboards for D&C and Operations teams. Create insightful visualizations that communicate complex data clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders. Maintain dashboard integrity by troubleshooting issues, reconnecting data sources, and optimizing refresh performance. Ensure reporting solutions align with enterprise BI standards.

Process Automation & Optimization

Utilize automation tools to streamline data analysis and business processes. Identify manual, repetitive processes and implement automated solutions. Develop reusable SQL templates, stored procedures, and data pipelines for recurring analysis. Continuously identify optimization opportunities in data workflows and reporting.

Collaboration & Stakeholder Support

Work closely with D&C engineers, operations leads, and business stakeholders to understand data requirements and provide analytical support. Collaborate effectively with data engineers, data scientists, and IT teams. Respond swiftly to ad-hoc data requests while maintaining quality standards. Document data lineage, business logic, and reporting methodologies.

Data Quality & Governance

Develop data validation queries and perform continuous QC across source systems. Monitor data freshness and proactively flag anomalies. Support master data management for wells, pads, assets, and operational hierarchies.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Experience

3+ years of professional experience as a Data Analyst, Business Intelligence Analyst, or similar role. 2+ years writing complex SQL queries in production environments, including creating new queries from scratch and optimizing existing ones. 2+ years hands-on experience building and managing Power BI and/or Spotfire dashboards. Experience supporting operations, engineering, or field teams in a data-intensive environment.

Technical Skills

Expert-level SQL including CTEs, subqueries, joins, aggregations, window functions, and string manipulation. Proficiency in Power BI (preferred) or Spotfire for building dashboards and reports (required). Strong understanding of relational database concepts and data modeling. Proficiency in Excel for data manipulation and analysis. Experience with version control systems (Git, Azure DevOps) for code management is a plus.

Analytical & Problem-Solving Skills

Strong analytical, problem-solving, and critical thinking abilities in a data-intensive environment. Ability to perform detailed analysis and translate complex data into clear business insights. Strong attention to detail with focus on data accuracy and completeness. Comfortable working with ambiguous requirements and iterating toward solutions.

Communication & Collaboration

Excellent communication, presentation, and data storytelling skills. Strong verbal and written communication skills with demonstrated ability to communicate professionally at all levels, including executive management. Ability to work effectively in a team, collaborating with engineers, operations, and business stakeholders. Self-starter who can manage multiple priorities and deadlines.

Education

Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Data Science, Finance, or related field.

Work Location

Ability to work a hybrid schedule in downtown Denver, CO.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Drilling & Completions knowledge and/or upstream oil & gas experience strongly preferred. Experience with OpenWells or similar well data management systems (Landmark, PPDM-based applications). Knowledge of oil & gas operational metrics including well-level data (API numbers, pads, formations, lateral lengths), drilling metrics (spud dates, drill days, directional surveys), and completion metrics (stages, proppant, pump schedules, frac timelines). Programming skills in Python or R for advanced analytics and automation. Experience with Microsoft Power Platform (Power Automate, Power Apps) for workflow automation. Experience with cloud data platforms (Azure, AWS).

WHAT YOU'LL WORK WITH

Primary Stakeholders: Drilling & Completions teams, Operations, Field personnel, Business units, Regulatory, HSE
