Job#: 3055367 Job Description: Sr. Robotics Systems Engineer
Location: North Reading, Massachusetts (Onsite)
Alternate Location: Westboro, Massachusetts
Role Overview
As a Senior Robotics Systems Engineer, you will be the primary guardian of our system's reliability, bridging the gap between cutting-edge software and physical performance. This role focuses on architecting and executing both automated and manual tests that rigorously verify robot software and its intricate mechatronic components. You will be responsible for building sophisticated test environments that span high-fidelity simulations and physical hardware units. A key focus of this role is the capture and validation of specific customer test cases, ensuring that unique field requirements are integrated into our release cycle. You will act as a quality gatekeeper, collating metrics across various engineering teams to provide a holistic view of release readiness. While you will define and execute all manual testing, you will also act as a strategic lead-partnering with engineering teams to incrementally automate manual workflows by defining requirements and ensuring the right automation is being built.
Key Responsibilities
- Customer-Centric Validation: Directly engage with stakeholders to understand and capture specific customer test cases, ensuring these scenarios are prioritized and validated during every release cycle.
- Quality Metrics Leadership: Collate and report quality metrics from cross-functional teams (Software, Hardware, Systems) to provide a unified data-driven recommendation for product releases.
- Manual Test Ownership: Define and execute the full suite of manual testing for new features and edge cases that cannot yet be automated, particularly in complex physical environments.
- Automation Strategy & Guidance: Partner with engineering teams to incrementally automate manual testing. You will be responsible for defining the "what" and "how" of automation, ensuring engineers build the right tools and scripts to replace manual efforts.
- Warehouse Workflow Emulation: Develop "day-in-the-life" testing scenarios that replicate high-density warehouse logistics workflows (e.g., picking, sorting, autonomous navigation) and real-world conditions like sensor noise and network latency.
- Infrastructure Building: Architect custom-built test benches and environments designed specifically for the unique challenges of mixed hardware-software domains, ensuring repeatable and scalable testing processes.
- Root Cause Investigation: Drive deep-dive technical investigations into system-level failures by analyzing logs, telemetry, and physical hardware behavior.
Required Qualifications
Education: A Bachelor's degree in a related Engineering field is required.
Experience: 6+ years in QA or Systems Engineering, with a proven track record in mixed hardware-software domains (e.g., robotics, UAVs, or automotive).
Technical Skills: Demonstrated experience in defining and executing manual testing for physical systems while successfully transitioning workflows to automation. Strong scripting skills in Python and experience working within the robotics software (e.g. ROS/ROS 2) ecosystem. Ability to analyze complex system logs and telemetry to perform deep-dive root cause analysis on electro-mechanical failures. Ability to collate technical metrics from disparate teams and translate them into a clear picture of release quality for stakeholders.
Preferred Qualifications
- Domain Expertise: Prior experience in warehouse automation, logistics robotics, or mobile platforms (AGVs/AMRs).
- Education: Advanced degree (Master's) in Robotics, Computer Science, or a related Engineering field.
- Simulation Mastery: Experience building and running tests in simulation engines (e.g., Gazebo, NVIDIA Isaac Sim, or Unity).
- Advanced Tooling: Familiarity with data visualization tools (e.g., Foxglove, Grafana) and CI/CD pipelines (e.g., GitLab CI, Jenkins).
- Safety Standards: Knowledge of functional safety standards relevant to industrial robotics (e.g., ISO 13849 or ANSI/RIA R15.08).
