Sr. Network Test Engineer

Position Summary (Summary of the Role)

The Sr. Network Test Engineer is a senior-level quality engineering role responsible for validating store network infrastructure, POS applications, peripherals, and connected devices across lab, mock-store, pilot-store, and production environments. This role partners with Network Engineering, InfoSec, Store Operations, application teams, vendors, and project leadership to identify risks, define test strategies, execute validation, troubleshoot issues, and confirm deployment readiness for store technology solutions.

Key Responsibilities

· Identify business, technical, and operational risks and contribute to user story and requirement definition.

· Define, develop, and review test cases, test plans, test scenarios, and overall test strategy.

· Read and analyze network requirements and Change Requests; identify testable, ambiguous, and missing requirements.

· Convert requirements and Change Requests into positive, negative, boundary, integration, and regression test scenarios.

· Build and maintain mock-store and lab environments that represent real store network and device configurations.

· Perform integration and functional testing of store devices after a Change Request is implemented.

· Execute connectivity, reachability, configuration, DNS, routing, firewall, port, and device-access validation.

· Perform network-performance testing, including latency, packet loss, bandwidth, and response-time analysis.

· Execute network failover, recovery, reliability, and stability testing.

· Test POS applications, payment devices, scanners, cameras, printers, and other store peripherals and cloud-connected services.

· Capture logs, packet traces, screenshots, test evidence, and performance measurements to support defect analysis.

· Troubleshoot issues across application, device, network, security, and configuration layers and help determine root cause.

· Manage defects through triage, prioritization, retesting, closure, and regression validation with full traceability.

· Coordinate test execution with Network Engineering, InfoSec, Store Operations, engineering teams, vendors, and AT&T.

· Support pilot-store validation, go/no-go reviews, production verification, and post-deployment issue investigation.

· Recommend wired or wireless implementation approaches based on reliability, security, bandwidth, cost, and maintainability.

· Improve repeatability through automation, scripting, reusable test utilities, and standardized test evidence.

Years of Experience

· Minimum 6 years of experience in software, systems, network, infrastructure, or retail technology testing.

Required Qualifications (Non-Negotiable)  

· Minimum 6 years of experience in test engineering, systems testing, network testing, or quality engineering.

· Strong understanding of IPv4/IPv6 addressing and subnetting, TCP versus UDP, DNS, DHCP, ARP, and ICMP.

· Working knowledge of HTTP/HTTPS, VLANs, VPNs, NAT, firewalls, routing, switching, Wi-Fi, and PoE.

· Experience understanding Change Requests, validating implemented configurations, and testing store devices after changes are applied.

· Experience executing connectivity, reachability, performance, failover, recovery, reliability, and stability tests.

· Ability to design positive, negative, boundary, integration, functional, regression, and end-to-end test scenarios.

· Hands-on experience with Wireshark or similar packet-capture tools; basic packet-capture interpretation is required.

· Experience using ping, tracert/traceroute, nslookup, dig, and comparable connectivity or DNS troubleshooting tools.

· Ability to analyze connectivity failures and identify DNS, routing, firewall, port, application, network, or configuration issues.

· Experience interpreting logs and error messages and performing basic network isolation and troubleshooting.

· Experience maintaining traceability from requirements to test cases to defects.

· Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to produce clear test evidence and technical documentation.

Nice-to-Have Qualifications (Desired but Not Required)

· Experience with Juniper and Aruba network environments.

· Experience with convenience retail, store technology, point-of-sale, payment, or other high-availability transaction systems.

· Experience with API, WebSocket, device, cloud-service, or hardware-integration testing.

· Experience with automated testing frameworks, scripting, packet analysis, or performance testing.

· Experience with pilot rollouts, change control, InfoSec reviews, and production-readiness assessments.

· Experience creating reusable test utilities, automation, or diagnostic scripts.

Education & Certification Requirements

· Degree in Computer Science or a similar area of study.

Preferred Industry Experience

· Experience with convenience retail, store technology, point-of-sale, payment, network infrastructure, or other high-availability retail systems is preferred.
