Description: Role: Azure Engineer Location: Omaha, NE (Onsite) Duration: 12+ MonthsAbout the Role We are looking for a Senior Azure Engineer with strong expertise in Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) and DevOps practices to design, build, and operate scalable cloud-native platforms. This role focuses on improving reliability, performance, security, cost efficiency, and developer productivity for mission-critical systems.
You will partner with product, security, and engineering teams to deliver highly automated, resilient, and compliant cloud solutions while participating in a 24x7 on-call rotation.
Key Responsibilities Cloud Platform & Architecture - Design, implement, and manage Azure landing zones and core platform services, including virtual networks, private endpoints, firewalls, and application gateways.
- Build scalable, secure, and high-availability cloud architectures using Azure-native services.
Infrastructure as Code & Automation - Develop Infrastructure as Code (IaC) using Terraform (preferred) and/or Bicep.
- Promote GitOps practices including version control, pull requests, and automated policy enforcement.
- Create reusable modules, templates, and standardized deployment patterns for engineering teams.
Reliability Engineering - Define and manage SLIs, SLOs, and error budgets for critical services.
- Lead reliability improvements, performance tuning, and capacity planning initiatives.
- Conduct resiliency testing including failover, disaster recovery, and chaos engineering.
Observability & Monitoring - Design and implement observability solutions using Azure Monitor, Log Analytics, and Application Insights.
- Integrate distributed tracing and metrics visualization using tools such as Prometheus and Grafana.
- Configure alerting and automated response mechanisms.
CI/CD & Release Engineering - Build and manage secure CI/CD pipelines using GitHub Actions and/or Azure DevOps.
- Implement automated testing, security scanning, and approval workflows.
- Standardize deployment strategies, including blue/green, canary, and rolling deployments.
Container & Platform Engineering - Manage and optimize container platforms, particularly Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS).
- Configure node pools, autoscaling, networking, ingress, and security policies.
- Manage container registries (ACR) and deployment pipelines.
Security & Compliance - Implement security best practices using Azure Policy, RBAC, and Privileged Identity Management (PIM).
- Manage secrets and certificates via Azure Key Vault.
- Integrate SAST, DAST, and container scanning into CI/CD pipelines.
- Support compliance initiatives aligned with industry standards (e.g., SOC 2, ISO 27001).
Incident Management & Operations - Participate in on-call rotations and lead incident response efforts.
- Perform root cause analysis (RCA) and drive continuous improvement through post-incident reviews.
- Develop runbooks and automation for operational processes.
Cost Optimization (FinOps) - Implement cost governance strategies including tagging, budgeting, and alerts.
- Continuously optimize cloud spend and resource usage.
Collaboration & Leadership - Mentor engineers and review technical designs and code contributions.
- Partner with application teams to onboard workloads and define non-functional requirements.
- Drive adoption of best practices and platform standards.
Qualifications Required Experience - 7+ years of hands-on experience with Azure cloud infrastructure in production environments.
- Strong expertise in SRE principles including reliability engineering, incident management, and performance optimization.
- Proven experience with CI/CD pipeline design and implementation.
Technical Skills - Deep experience with Azure services such as:
- AKS, App Services, Functions, API Management
- Azure SQL/Managed Instance, Cosmos DB, Storage
- Event Hub, Service Bus, Redis
- Networking (VNet, Peering, Private Link, Application Gateway, Front Door)
- Strong Infrastructure as Code experience with Terraform (preferred) or Bicep.
- Proficiency in Git-based workflows (GitHub or Azure DevOps).
Observability & Monitoring - Experience with Azure Monitor, Log Analytics, Application Insights, and alerting systems.
Networking & Security - Solid understanding of networking concepts (DNS, TLS, routing, load balancing).
- Experience with identity and access management (Azure AD / Entra ID).
- Familiarity with RBAC, Azure Policy, and secure cloud design principles.
Programming & Systems - Scripting skills in PowerShell and/or Python.
- Strong Linux system fundamentals.
Preferred Qualifications - Experience with Prometheus and Grafana.
- Knowledge of compliance frameworks and cloud governance models.
- Exposure to large-scale distributed systems and platform engineering
