Summary

Role Summary

Nuuly is looking for a Lead Data Scientist who will lead data science work embedded in a new initiative at Nuuly: Inventory Science, aimed at optimizing the acquisition and utilization of inventory across the rental lifecycle. This new initiative will involve utilizing data science and machine learning best practices to achieve business objectives, including demand forecasting, pricing, and experimentation. This individual will play a critical role in leading and executing technical projects in the inventory space and collaborating with stakeholders across the organization.

Role Responsibilities

  • Manage machine learning and statistical models to address various business needs
  • Demonstrate strong expertise in designing and executing A/B tests, analyzing experiments, and troubleshooting ML model behavior. Conduct causal inference studies and exploratory analyses to measure the impact of strategic initiatives and inform decision-making at scale.
  • Collaborate within data science and analytics organizations and communicate across multiple functional/technical areas
  • Effectively manage timelines and deliverables for multiple technical projects.

Role Qualifications

Technical:
  • At least 7 years job experience in data science/machine learning
  • Strong statistical and analytical skills (e.g., hypothesis testing, distributional analysis, uncertainty estimation)
  • Experience with a wide range of ML techniques (e.g., tree-based models, clustering, neural networks, time series forecasting) and model evaluation (troubleshooting, metrics, benchmarking)
  • Strong familiarity with ML tools and libraries (e.g., scikit-learn, TensorFlow, PyTorch, Jupyter Notebooks)
  • Strong Python and SQL experience
  • Strong with ML tools (e.g., scikit-learn, Jupyter Notebooks, TensorFlow, PyTorch, LLMs).
  • Understanding of fundamental Machine Learning concepts (train/dev/test sets, overfitting, scoring metrics).
  • Experience with version control/git

Leadership and Communication:
  • Serves as a technical mentor and sounding board for other team members
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Strong interest in the Nuuly business, and figuring out how to tailor ML solutions to the uniqueness of the rental business model.

Problem Solving:
  • Ability to analyze complex problems and develop creative solutions.

Preferred Skills:
  • Experience in tech organizations within e-commerce, fashion, or adjacent industries
  • Experience in demand forecasting and pricing
  • Use of coding agents (Claude Code, Cursor)

Education:
  • Masters or PhD degree in Computer Science, Analytics, Data Science, Mathematics or related field or equivalent job experience
