Job Duties
The Southern Virginia Higher Education Center (SVHEC) is seeking an IT and Operations Specialist to support its mission of advancing Southern Virginia's economic potential through education, innovation, and collaboration. This position provides a wide range of services to support, fix, and troubleshoot computer systems, building security systems, local area networks, wide area networks, cloud networks, and other data networks for staff, academic partners, students, and other users on a daily basis. The IT and Operations Specialist supports campus technology needs by maintaining and enhancing hardware and software for administrative staff, faculty, students, and academic partners, including computer labs, classrooms, and audio-visual systems, and by assisting users with the effective use of technology in instructional and administrative settings. The position maintains and enhances SVHEC's network and server environment, including wireless access, performs monthly patch management and security updates, and implements network changes in coordination with the IT Manager and IT staff. The role also administers cloud-based services such as Microsoft 365, SharePoint, OneDrive, G-Suite, including account creation, security permissions, groups, synchronization, and onboarding/offboarding training for end users. In addition, the IT and Operations Specialist manages IT and Operations (OPS) asset inventory by maintaining accurate records of campus IT and OPS assets, state asset tags, and lifecycle data, and by supporting purchasing decisions that promote efficient use of resources and minimize waste. The position assists with maintaining warranty, licensure, and service agreement information and incorporates industry best practices into asset lifecycle management. The IT and Operations Specialist may be called upon to support emergency response needs and strategic plan objectives, and is expected to exemplify SVHEC's shared values of Excellence, Teamwork, Honor, Innovation, Customer Focus, and Stewardship in all activities and interactions.
Minimum Qualifications
Considerable work experience in the information technology field. Working knowledge of Microsoft Windows, Active Directory, Microsoft 365 and G-Suite. Working knowledge of Audio-Visual equipment such as projectors, amplifiers, speakers, and wiring. Knowledge of networking concepts, protocols, IP telephony, topologies, and network interconnections. Skilled with IT telecommunication [computer, server, network] device installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting. Knowledge of current security standards and compliances. Skilled in project management to set goals, meet milestones, meet deadlines, create knowledge base, and communicate to the team. Experience providing exceptional outcomes-based end user support. Experience flexibly working with others and meeting the needs of multiple stakeholders including staff, students, and partners. Experience establishing and meeting timelines. High school graduate or equivalent.
