Clinical Engineering / HTM Operations Manager provides operational leadership for the Clinical Engineering program within an Academic Medical Center, supporting patient care, medical education, and clinical research missions. This role ensures the safe, compliant, and reliable operation of medical and research-associated devices across inpatient, outpatient, procedural, teaching, and investigational environments. The Manager's responsibilities are limited to
technical safety, operational readiness, and regulatory alignment of equipment, and do not include ownership of research protocols, investigational device accountability, or study conduct.
Key ResponsibilitiesOperational & Program Leadership- Manage day-to-day operations of the Clinical Engineering/HTM department, ensuring timely maintenance, repair, and technical support of medical and research-associated equipment across assigned clinical and academic areas.
- Establish and monitor operational performance metrics including response time, preventive maintenance compliance, corrective maintenance trends, and equipment availability.
- Develop, implement, and enforce standardized workflows, policies, and procedures aligned with healthcare regulatory, accreditation, and institutional requirements.
- Lead continuous improvement initiatives focused on reliability, safety, and service consistency in high-acuity, teaching, and investigational care environments.
Staff Leadership & Development- Directly supervise Biomedical Equipment Technicians (BMETs), senior technicians, and specialty technical staff, as applicable.
- Conduct hiring, onboarding, scheduling, performance evaluations, competency assessments, and corrective action as required.
- Promote certification attainment, advanced technical skill development, and cross-training to support specialized clinical, teaching, and research technologies.
- Foster a culture of accountability, safety, and service excellence in support of patient care and academic missions.
Regulatory, Accreditation & Investigational Device Support- Ensure compliance with applicable standards and regulations including Joint Commission, CMS Conditions of Participation, NFPA, AAMI, manufacturer requirements, and applicable institutional policies.
- Provide technical safety evaluation, inspection, maintenance, and operational support for investigational, grant-funded, or protocol-driven devices when approved for use within the organization, in coordination with appropriate stakeholders.
- Clearly delineate and maintain boundaries between Clinical Engineering responsibilities and those of Principal Investigators (PIs), research sponsors, IRB, and clinical trial offices, ensuring HTM does not assume protocol ownership, subject safety oversight, or regulatory reporting obligations.
- Support documentation practices that demonstrate equipment safety and operability without certifying clinical efficacy, study compliance, or research outcomes.
- Maintain audit and survey readiness for equipment used in patient care, teaching, and investigational settings.
Financial & Contract Oversight- Assist with development and monitoring of departmental operating budgets related to maintenance and operational support.
- Oversee service contracts, vendor performance, and invoice validation for clinical and research-associated equipment support services.
- Support cost containment and service optimization initiatives while maintaining reliability in mission-critical academic and research programs.
Technology Implementation & Academic Integration- Partner with clinical, academic, research, IT, facilities, and construction teams on equipment planning and coordination for new construction, renovations, and program expansions, including teaching labs, simulation centers, and research spaces.
- Support implementation and operational readiness of new medical and research technologies, ensuring appropriate testing, documentation, training coordination, and handoff to operational teams.
- Coordinate with medical device cybersecurity, networking, and interoperability teams where research and clinical systems intersect.
Stakeholder Engagement- Serve as an operational liaison for clinical departments, academic programs, and research teams regarding equipment service performance and issue resolution.
- Manage escalations that may impact patient care, academic activities, or research continuity, and lead service recovery efforts.
- Represent Clinical Engineering in interdisciplinary operational, academic, and research-focused forums.
Required Qualifications- Bachelor's degree in Biomedical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related technical discipline, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Minimum 5-7 years of progressive experience in Clinical Engineering/HTM, including supervisory or lead responsibilities.
- Demonstrated experience supporting medical equipment operations in an acute care hospital or academic health system.
- Working knowledge of healthcare regulatory, accreditation, and safety standards.
Preferred Qualifications- Master's degree in Biomedical Engineering, Engineering Management, Healthcare Administration, or related field.
- Professional certification(s) such as CBET, CHTM, or equivalent.
- Experience in an Academic Medical Center, teaching hospital, or research-intensive clinical environment.
- Familiarity with investigational device workflows, simulation technologies, or research-support equipment.
