The Fundamental Physics Directorate at SLAC is seeking applicants for a postdoctoral Research Associate to work in AI for particle physics detector simulation and reconstruction. In particular, the successful candidate will work on the Parnassus project, on one or more of the following activities:
  • Core software development for the program user interface and documentation.
  • Integrating updated AI tools and best practices to improve performance.
  • Developing detector models for running or future experiments.
The initial term of this position is one year, with the possibility of extension up to five years upon annual review. The position is fully on-site at SLAC.

Qualifications

This position requires a PhD in experimental particle physics, nuclear physics, or a related field at the time of appointment. The successful candidate should have a demonstrated record of excellence in research, and experience with one or more of the following:
  • Monte Carlo simulation of particle detectors
  • Training generative AI tools for particle data
  • Development of fast simulation or recondition tools
  • Data analysis in particle or nuclear physics

To obtain this credential, employees must successfully complete the applicable tier of federal background investigation post hire and receive a favorable federal adjudication. The tier of federal background investigation will be determined by job duties and national security or public trust responsibilities associated with the job. All tiers of investigation include a declaration of illegal drug activities, including use, supply, possession, or manufacture within the last 1 to 7 years (depending on the applicable tier of investigation). Illegal drug activities include marijuana and cannabis derivatives, which are still considered illegal under federal law, regardless of state laws.

The expected pay range for this position is $70,000 to $100,000 per annum. SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory/Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs .
