Location: Hartford, CT (Hybrid)

Job Description:

Virtus is seeking an experienced SQL Developer with strong Financial Services domain experience and extensive hands-on experience with SQL Server, query development, SQL optimization, data modeling, and data flow.

The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of database architecture and be highly proficient in writing complex SQL queries, developing stored procedures, optimizing database performance, and working with large volumes of financial data. This role is heavily focused on the database/server-side and data layers.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and maintain complex SQL Server databases, queries, stored procedures, functions, and views.
  • Develop highly efficient and optimized SQL queries for large and complex datasets.
  • Perform SQL query optimization and performance tuning, including execution-plan analysis, indexing, joins, and query restructuring.
  • Analyze existing SQL code and identify opportunities to improve performance, scalability, and maintainability.
  • Develop complex SQL queries for data extraction, transformation, validation, reconciliation, and reporting.
  • Understand and document end-to-end data flows across applications, databases, and downstream systems.
  • Trace data from source systems through various transformation and processing layers to target systems.
  • Develop and maintain stored procedures, triggers, functions, views, and other database objects.
  • Work closely with application developers, Business Analysts, Data Engineers, and business stakeholders to understand data requirements.
  • Perform data analysis and identify data-quality issues, inconsistencies, and gaps.
  • Support data migration, integration, and transformation activities.
  • Troubleshoot database and production issues and perform root-cause analysis.
  • Monitor database performance and recommend improvements.
  • Ensure data integrity, accuracy, consistency, and security.
  • Participate in code reviews and establish SQL development best practices.
  • Create and maintain technical documentation related to database structures, data flows, and SQL processes.

Required Skills

  • 5+ years of strong SQL Development experience.
  • Extensive hands-on experience with Microsoft SQL Server.
  • Strong proficiency in writing complex SQL queries.
  • Advanced experience with SQL query optimization and performance tuning.
  • Strong knowledge of execution plans, indexing strategies, joins, subqueries, CTEs, temporary tables, and window functions.
  • Strong experience developing Stored Procedures, Functions, Views, and Triggers.
  • Experience working with large volumes of data and complex relational databases.
  • Strong understanding of data flow and data lineage.
  • Experience with data transformation, data validation, reconciliation, and data quality.
  • Strong database design and data modeling knowledge.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.

Financial Services Experience

  • Strong experience working in the Financial Services / Investment Management industry.
  • Understanding of financial data, investment products, securities, portfolios, transactions, and financial reporting.
  • Experience working with investment-management or asset-management data is highly preferred.
  • Understanding of financial data processing, reconciliation, and validation.
  • Ability to translate financial business requirements into efficient SQL and data solutions.

Preferred Skills

  • Experience with ETL/data integration technologies.
  • Experience with SSIS or similar data-integration tools.
  • Experience with SQL Server Integration Services and SQL Server Agent.
  • Knowledge of data warehousing concepts and dimensional modeling.
  • Experience with Azure/AWS data services is a plus.
  • Experience with Power BI or other reporting tools is a plus.
  • Experience working in Agile development environments.
  • Familiarity with Git, Azure DevOps, Jira, or similar development/project management tools.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate is a strong SQL Server Developer with Financial Services experience who can independently work on complex database and data-related problems.

The role is particularly focused on:

  • SQL Server development
  • Complex SQL formulation
  • SQL query optimization & performance tuning
  • Stored procedures and database programming
  • Data manipulation and transformation
  • End-to-end data flow
  • Data validation and reconciliation
  • Financial/investment data

This is not primarily a reporting or front-end BI role. Candidates should have strong hands-on experience working at the SQL Server, database, and data layers of enterprise applications.
