Summary

Description
This is a remote Senior Cloud Services Engineer position responsible for building, automating, and operating the cloud platform that underpins mission-critical applications across the enterprise. The role sits on a growing Azure-focused engineering team (expanding from 6 8) that owns both the platform layer (identity, networking, DNS, backups, governance) and project delivery/migration work. This hire will play a major part in enabling scalable, secure, and automated cloud operations.
Daily responsibilities center on Azure engineering, Terraform-driven IaC, GitLab-based CI/CD, and AI-assisted development. The engineer will design, build, and support Azure resources; implement landing zone patterns; maintain Kubernetes (AKS) environments; participate in system design discussions; and collaborate with architects, developers, and application teams to support digital transformation initiatives.
A major focus of the team is AI-first engineering. The environment uses generative AI and agentic workflows to accelerate delivery, improve documentation, and streamline infrastructure provisioning. The engineer will be expected to leverage AI daily for code generation, troubleshooting, automation, and experimentation.
From day one, the role requires a self-starter who thrives in a remote, autonomous environment-someone who communicates proactively, raises blockers early, collaborates with the team, and demonstrates initiative without micromanagement. This team values individuals who contribute solutions, improve patterns, and take ownership of their work.
This engineer will have significant influence on the evolution of cloud architecture, tooling standardization, operational maturity, and the organization's overall ability to deliver cloud services quickly and reliably. Success in this role directly impacts the scalability, security, and efficiency of the enterprise cloud platform and the speed at which application teams can deliver business value.
Skills
Azure, Cloud, Architecture, terraform, kubernetes, monitoring tools, CI/CD, IaC, Infrastructure Testing, gitlab, github, iam, Networking, databricks, Migration, Migration strategy, Powershell, Build, Design, Devops
Essential Skills (in priority order)
Terraform (Infrastructure as Code) - Required
How applied: Build, version, and operate Azure infrastructure via reusable modules; manage remote state; run plans/applies through GitLab CI with approvals/policy checks; standardize landing zone patterns; reduce drift.
Key attributes of success: Writes clean, composable modules; understands state/workspaces; safe change workflows (plan > review > apply); secrets and policy handling; troubleshooting failed plans/applies; coaches others.
Years required: 3+ years hands-on Terraform in production (IaC breadth acceptable, but Terraform depth is non-negotiable).
Azure (hands-on delivery & operations) - Required
How applied: Design and operate VNets/subnets/peering, NSGs/ASGs, Private Endpoints, Key Vault, Compute, Storage, Entra ID/RBAC; support greenfield builds and migrations; implement governance, monitoring, and backups.
Key attributes of success: Ships working Azure solutions end-to-end; balances platform standards with project needs; documents patterns; debugs live issues calmly.
Years required: 5+ years Azure, or exceptional multi-cloud with proven Azure ramp (Azure-first strongly preferred).
Core Fundamentals: Identity, Networking, DNS - Required
How applied: Entra ID/RBAC/managed identities; VNet routing, peering, firewalls; name resolution patterns with Azure DNS/private zones; private endpoint patterns across spokes/subscriptions.
Key attributes of success: Diagnoses auth/route/DNS issues quickly; designs secure access; prevents misconfigurations through guardrails.
Years required: 5+ years applying these fundamentals in production.
GitLab Ecosystem (Repos, CI, Artifacts, Security) - Required
How applied: Drive CI pipelines for Terraform (plan/apply by environment), code reviews, artifact/version management, basic SAST/secret controls; enable repeatable delivery.
Key attributes of success: Builds reliable pipelines; enforces review/approval flow; integrates policy checks; improves developer experience.
Years required: 2+ years GitLab (or equivalent CI with rapid ramp to GitLab).
Kubernetes (AKS preferred) - Strong Plus / Often Needed
How applied: Operate AKS (cluster/node pools, upgrades, ingress, Azure CNI, identity/Key Vault integration, secrets, policies); support app teams' deployments and day-2 ops.
Key attributes of success: Minimizes downtime on upgrades; right-sizes clusters; secures ingress/egress; observability in place; can guide app teams.
Years expected: ~2 years meaningful K8s ops (AKS a plus).
AI-Assisted Engineering (GenAI & agentic usage) - Required for team fit
How applied: Daily use of copilots/agents to write Terraform, docs, scripts, and remediation runbooks; prompt with context (APIs, reference guides); participate in team hack sessions; never use AI during interviews.
Key attributes of success: Concrete examples of AI accelerating delivery; knows when to trust/verify; crafts strong prompts; shares patterns with the team.
Years expected: ~1 year hands-on GenAI tooling (Copilot/CLI/agents) or clear proof of fast ramp.
2 years or more of DataBricks
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Optional and desired skills will enhance effectiveness in this role and complement the core Azure/Terraform responsibilities.
Candidates with Kubernetes/AKS operational experience can support containerized workloads more efficiently, including cluster upgrades, ingress configuration, Azure CNI networking, managed identities, secret stores, and day-2 operations. Experience with Nutanix Kubernetes is a plus.
Familiarity with AI-assisted engineering (GenAI and agentic workflows) is strongly valued. The team is AI-first, using copilots/agents to generate infrastructure code, documentation, troubleshooting steps, and architectural patterns. Candidates should demonstrate at least one year of hands-on AI tooling, the ability to craft high-context prompts, and practical examples of using AI to accelerate delivery.
Additional desirable skills include:
Broader IaC/automation tools (Ansible, Pulumi)
CI/CD pipeline logic and policy-as-code (OPA/Conftest)
Cloud governance, cost optimization, Azure Policy
Cloud security hardening, workload identities, and secret hygiene
Strong documentation, diagramming, and standards development experience
Knowledge of on-prem to cloud integrations and hybrid connectivity
Familiarity with ITIL, ITSM, and change management processes
Healthcare industry exposure (nice to have)
Required Education/Certifications/Experience:
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, IT, Engineering, or equivalent experience (preferred)
Public cloud certifications preferred
Minimum 7+ years in IT, with 5+ years in public cloud
Ability to present to technical leaders, develop engineering roadmaps, and contribute to enterprise architecture
Key Attributes of Success:
Self-starter mindset, proactive communication in a remote environment, strong analytical and problem-solving skills, rapid learner, collaborative, and comfortable taking initiative without micromanagement.
