Certification Required: CompTIA Security+ (or willingness to obtain within 6 months)
Overview
The Optical Communications Technology Group develops cutting‑edge optical communication technologies and systems supporting National Security and Civil missions. The team specializes in advanced beam director systems, next‑generation communication modems, and active beam‑control hardware across terrestrial, space, undersea, and quantum domains.
This position supports the group’s IT needs, including maintenance of specialized and classified systems, hands‑on end‑user support, and administration of a diverse mixed‑OS infrastructure. The role is approximately 65% Linux systems administration and 35% Windows systems administration, requiring a well‑rounded, highly technical Systems Administrator.
Responsibilities
The Systems Administrator will:
Infrastructure & Systems Administration
- Provide installation, configuration, maintenance, repair, and upgrades of workstations, servers, and network infrastructure (physical and virtual).
- Support Linux (Red Hat, Ubuntu), Windows, and macOS environments.
- Diagnose, troubleshoot, and resolve technical issues across multiple OS platforms (Linux, Windows, macOS, Solaris).
- Maintain server‑grade and desktop hardware, including configuration, troubleshooting, upgrades, and lifecycle maintenance.
- Manage vulnerability remediation (CAT 1/2/3) across classified and unclassified assets.
- Ensure all systems comply with Laboratory security standards (RMF/CMMC).
- Support centralized authentication (SSSD, IDM, AD), including centralized sudo, Kerberos, GSSAPI, and smart‑card integration.
- Administer virtualized environments using VMware ESXi, vCenter, and vSAN.
- Implement strong backup strategies and protect mission‑critical data assets.
Networking & Architecture
- Configure and support networking applications and protocols: TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, NTP, SSH, FTP, HTTP/S.
- Support Dell hardware and Juniper network switches.
- Contribute to system architecture, system design, configuration management, and documentation.
Tools & Software
- Administer Active Directory, LDAP, SQL tools, Splunk, NoMachine, Yum/DNF/RPM, GitHub, GitLab, and RDP technologies.
- Provide scripting and automation support using Python, PowerShell, Bash/Shell, Ansible, and Perl.
- Support Red Hat Satellite for Linux system management (nice to have).
User & Operations Support
- Provide direct end‑user support including imaging, software installation, printer maintenance, and general troubleshooting.
- Manage inventory of IT equipment, supplies, and spares.
- Expedite and off‑load support requests coming from the Information Services helpdesk.
- Support evolving technologies as adopted by the Laboratory.
- Perform all additional related duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications (Must‑Have)
Certification
- CompTIA Security+ (or ability to obtain within 6 months)
Experience (5+ years each)
- Desktop and server support (installation, patching, auditing, security, AD, configuration)
- Linux, Windows, and macOS operating systems
- Hardware configuration, troubleshooting, maintenance (desktop & server‑grade)
- Networking protocols: TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, NTP, SSH, FTP, HTTP/S
- Programming/scripting: PowerShell, Ansible, Python, Shell scripting, Perl
- Diagnosing and troubleshooting complex systems issues
- Linux systems administration (Red Hat + Ubuntu)
- Active Directory, LDAP
- Strong backup and data protection experience
- Systems Administration across mixed environments
- Virtualization technologies: VMware ESXi, vCenter configuration
