Position Overview
The Planet Group is seeking a Modern Data Engineer with 5+ years of experience working in data engineering or software development roles. This position focuses on building and supporting enterprise data solutions across hybrid environments, with an emphasis on modern lakehouse architecture and AI-assisted development practices.
Core Responsibilities
• Design, build, and maintain scalable batch and/or streaming data pipelines
• Develop and optimize ETL processes using SSIS or similar tools
• Transform raw data into curated, reusable datasets for analytics and reporting
• Support business intelligence and reporting initiatives using Power BI
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver data solutions in a production-critical environment
• Contribute to the transition toward a modern lakehouse architecture (e.g., Databricks)
Technical Qualifications
• Strong SQL skills and experience with data modeling (star schema, dimensional modeling)
• Hands-on experience with SQL Server
• Experience with ETL development and data pipeline frameworks
• Familiarity with Spark-based platforms; experience with Databricks is preferred
• Experience working with relational databases, data lakes, and NoSQL systems
• Familiarity with orchestration tools such as Airflow (or equivalent)
• Experience with CI/CD practices and Git-based workflows for data pipelines
AI & Modern Engineering Experience
• Experience using AI tools or copilots to assist with data engineering tasks (e.g., SQL development, pipeline generation, testing, documentation)
• Exposure to automation tools or AI agents that improve engineering efficiency is a plus
Preferred Experience
• Experience working in enterprise environments with a mix of on-premises and cloud technologies
• Background supporting analytics in regulated or production-critical industries (e.g., utilities, operations)
Soft Skills
• Strong communication and collaboration skills
• Comfortable working directly with engineers, stakeholders, and leadership
• Ability to operate effectively in a structured, regulated environment
