Sr. API & Middleware Engineer Salt Lake City, Utah Contract to Hire $81 to $86 per hour with a conversion salary of $160K to $170K annually + bonus Summary The Sr. API & Middleware Engineer is responsible for the design, operation, and optimization of enterprise integration platforms and API solutions. This role ensures reliable, secure, and scalable data exchange across systems while supporting modernization and digital transformation initiatives. The position combines architectural oversight, and operational accountability.
Responsibilities - Lead and develop the API and middleware team, driving performance, accountability, and technical growth
- Own integration and API platform operations, including availability, scalability, and security
- Define and enforce integration standards, patterns, and best practices
- Manage the API lifecycle from design through deployment, monitoring, and versioning
- Oversee incident, change, and problem management for middleware and API services
- Partner with application, infrastructure, security, and business teams to align integration solutions with enterprise needs
- Monitor service metrics and drive automation and performance improvements
Requirements - Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or a related field
- 5+ years of experience working with middleware and API platforms
- 2+ years of experience in a leadership or supervisory capacity
- Strong knowledge of integration patterns, API gateways, and middleware technologies
- Solid understanding of IT service management practices; ITIL experience preferred
- Hands-on experience with middleware and integration tools such as WebSphere, JBoss, Tomcat, Kafka, MuleSoft, and Postman
- Experience working with containerization and orchestration platforms ( Docker, Kubernetes)
- Familiarity with cloud platforms and API management services (e.g., Azure API Management, AWS, Azure DevOps)
- Knowledge of scripting languages such as Python or Bash
- Experience managing vendors and third-party support relationships
Bonus Skills - Experience designing highly available, scalable integration architectures
- Background in automation, CI/CD pipelines, or infrastructure-as-code
- Experience supporting hybrid and multi-cloud environments
- Familiarity with security frameworks for APIs (OAuth, OpenID Connect, token-based auth)
- Strong communication skills with the ability to bridge technical and business teams
