Job Description:
- This role directly contributes to the successful modernization of the utility’s metering infrastructure.
- By ensuring that AMI 2.0 technologies are thoroughly tested, validated, and deployed with high reliability.
- This position requires close collaboration with internal teams—including engineering, IT, grid operations, and field operations—as well as external metering and AMI solution vendors.
- The Engineer ensures that metering systems, communication components, and grid applications are technically feasible, interoperable, secure, and aligned with the utility’s quality, performance, and reliability standards.
- This role is instrumental in enabling successful field readiness and deployment of next-generation AMI technologies across the service territory.
Job Responsibilities:
Testing & Evaluation:
- Conduct detailed functional, hardware, communication, and electrical performance testing for qualified AMI 2.0 metering solutions.
- Support end-to-end system integration testing, including interoperability between meters, head end systems, networks, and grid management applications.
- Validate meter firmware, configuration files, communication modules (WI-SUN, LTE, Wi-Fi), and AMI platform performance against defined requirements.
- Troubleshoot customer-facing applications, test tools, and field diagnostic tools, escalating issues as needed and documenting resolutions.
- Analyze test results, track defects, and contribute to corrective action plans to ensure successful solution certification.
Field Readiness & Deployment Support:
- Support execution of the AMI 2.0 Field Test Pilot, ensuring foundational use cases—meter reads, firmware downloads, service switch operations, outage/restore notifications—are validated under real operational conditions.
- Develop technical procedures, job aids, process documentation, and field test protocols for Field Technicians and Meter Operations teams.
- Assist with readiness assessments, training activities, and operational coordination to ensure field teams are equipped for deployment.
- Participate in pre-deployment change management activities by reviewing system changes, assessing operational impacts, and communicating updates to stakeholders.
- Provide onsite or remote technical support during early deployment phases and escalate field issues.
Technical & Vendor Engagement:
- Partner with metering and AMI vendors during solution development, enhancement cycles, firmware updates, and defect resolution.
- Review and validate vendor-supplied hardware specifications, test reports, engineering documentation, and performance claims.
- Support vendor and internal integration efforts to ensure firmware, communication modules, and device behaviors align with AMI 2.0 architectural requirements.
- Assist in troubleshooting multi-vendor interoperability issues involving meters, communication networks, and head-end systems.
- Follow up on vendor corrective actions, ensuring timely delivery of fixes, patches, and updated test packages.
Education: Bachelor''s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Computer or Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field.
