Plant Farley, located near Dothan, Alabama, is a key part of Southern Nuclear's fleet, providing safe, reliable, carbon-free nuclear energy to the Southeast. Engineers supporting Farley work in a collaborative, safety-focused environment where design excellence, operational rigor, and continuous improvement are core expectations. The Farley site offers a strong sense of community, access to outdoor recreation, and a high quality of life while supporting work of critical national importance.
Key Responsibilities
The Central Design Electrical / I&C Engineer is responsible for the following:
  • Lead and develop engineering analyses, calculations, and design packages for electrical power and I&C systems
  • Design and implement fleet-wide and site-specific plant modifications supporting major capital and modernization projects
  • Perform and oversee power system studies, including load flow, short-circuit, motor starting, and dynamic response analyses
  • Support digital control systems, including PLC-based platforms, industrial networks, and plant software systems
  • Provide engineering support for real-time plant issues, troubleshooting, and emergent problem resolution
  • Develop technical specifications, evaluate vendor proposals, and support procurement and vendor oversight
  • Ensure design integrity through configuration management, setpoint control, and design basis maintenance
  • Support regulatory-driven design processes in accordance with Southern Nuclear engineering standards
Technical Environment
Engineers in this role work within a highly technical and regulated design environment that includes:
  • Electrical power system modeling tools (e.g., ETAP or equivalent)
  • Industrial Control Systems (ICS), PLCs, SCADA, DCS, and digital plant platforms
  • Software-based engineering tools supporting nuclear design and configuration control
  • Rigorous nuclear quality, documentation, and change-management processes

This position provides exposure across the entire Southern Nuclear fleet, not just a single site.
Education Requirements
  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET-accredited program
Background / Experience Requirements
Preferred qualifications include:
  • 3+ years of experience in electrical, digital, or I&C engineering
  • Experience developing engineering design modifications in industrial or power generation environments
  • Working knowledge of power system behavior, including fault analysis and dynamic response
  • Experience using ETAP or similar electrical modeling tools
  • Familiarity with industrial control systems or digital plant infrastructure
  • Exposure to nuclear, power generation, or other highly regulated industries
Other Attributes
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to diagnose complex technical issues
  • Ability to lead small technical efforts or engineering initiatives
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to collaborate across disciplines, including operations, digital, cyber, and project teams
  • Curiosity and initiative to evaluate and implement emerging technologies
Location & Travel
  • Primary location: Birmingham Energy Center
  • Alternate Southern Nuclear locations may be considered based on candidate
  • Travel up to 25% to support Plant Farley and fleet implementation activities
