What We're Looking For
HNTB's Northern New England office continues to grow, and we are expanding our construction inspection team to support ongoing and upcoming projects for the Maine Turnpike Authority. We are hiring at multiple levels and are seeking candidates with experience in highway, bridge, pavement, and/or building construction inspection. New hires will work as part of a seasoned HNTB inspection team-alongside Maine Turnpike Authority staff-to provide day-to-day oversight of construction activities, ensure work is performed in accordance with plans and specifications, and support the delivery of projects that improve safety, reliability, and mobility for the traveling public.

For more than 80 years, HNTB has partnered with the Maine Turnpike Authority to deliver a diverse portfolio of work, ranging from routine repair and paving projects to some of the largest and most complex projects in their program. This role offers the opportunity to join a stable, experienced team working on meaningful infrastructure projects that directly shape Maine's transportation system.

This opportunity entails being responsible for observing contractor's work to monitor the projects compliance with contract documents and report findings. Coordinates and monitors the inspection efforts of inspection staff in their assigned areas of responsibilities on small to mid size projects to determine that Contractor's construction activities are monitored and controlled in accordance with design plans, specifications and contractual requirements. May provide guidance and training to inspection staff. Monitors contractor's construction progress as compared to overall project and contract schedule. Responsible for assisting in the compliance and modification of design calculations, technical reports, engineering plans, specifications, and other contract documents for assigned projects. Leverages technical knowledge to assist in the review and interpretation of construction drawings, specifications, and construction reports.

What You'll Do:
  • Assists with and monitors construction field work tasks and activities on a project to ensure conformance to plans and specifications. Reads, comprehends, and checks for compliance with applicable contract documents.
  • Performs or observes on-site material testing. Reviews plans and specifications to determine material requirements (quantities and qualities), pricing of materials, etc. and ensures that procedures and materials comply with plans and specifications.
  • Read and interpret construction drawings and specifications and identify discrepancies or conflicts within the documents.
  • Reviews contractor's daily construction reports for accuracy, thoroughness, and consistency. Regularly reviews contractor's as-built mark-ups, documents project progress using video and photos.
  • Consults with Resident Engineer on work progress and construction problems, proactively recommends solutions, assists in the resolution of issues, and acts as a liaison with the engineer of record.
  • Remains current and knowledgeable of industry technology and tools used to perform inspection work through industry resources, training, and research. Gains exposure to new technology and utilizes it (GPS/Rovers) to increase efficiency and accuracy of inspection tasks.
  • Performs office engineer work when needed including but not limited to; prepares meeting agendas and meeting minutes, assists in processing and maintains tracking logs for RFIs, submittals, pay estimates, and other deliverables.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

What You'll Need:
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering and 2 years relevant experience, or
  • Master's degree in Engineering and 1 year relevant experience, or
  • Doctorate degree in Engineering.

What You'll Bring:
  • Identifies complex discrepancies or conflicts within documents and evaluating the quality of work performed by using inspection checklists.
  • Performs increasingly complex calculations, develops plots and graphs using Excel, and drafts detailed reports for project reporting to the client with guidance from more experienced staff.
  • Performs basic shop drawing and submittal review and evaluates the contractor's CPM schedule.

What We Prefer:
  • Engineer in Training (EIT), or American Concrete Institute (ACI).
  • Trained in digital construction management software such as Constructware, Asite or similar preferred.
