Our extensive workforce includes both union and nonunion teams, which, combined with our specialized equipment fleet, allows us to effectively meet our clients' needs for power delivery, emergency restoration, and ongoing maintenance. We've been involved in some of the most challenging and recognizable electric projects across the U.S. From the electric plant to the end users, MasTec's experienced managers and crews consistently deliver transmission, distribution, and substation & switchyard services with an unfailing commitment to safety, integrity, and sustainable practices.

We are seeking a talented and motivated Protection and Controls Engineer to join our growing Power Delivery team. In this role, you will be responsible for the design, coordination, and implementation of protection, control, and communication systems for high-voltage substations and transmission projects. You will lead projects from conception through commissioning, ensuring that designs meet client specifications, industry standards, and reliability requirements

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop protection, control, and communication systems for high-voltage substations and transmission/distribution projects.
  • Prepare engineering design packages, including one-line and three-line diagrams, AC/DC schematics, panel layouts, wiring diagrams, and bills of materials.
  • Develop relay protection schemes and coordinate settings for various system configurations.
  • Create and review logic diagrams, functional control drawings, and SCADA I/O lists.
  • Perform calculations and studies to ensure system reliability, selectivity, and coordination.
  • Coordinate with substation physical design, relay settings, telecommunications, and other project teams to ensure cohesive and accurate designs.
  • Provide technical support during project construction, commissioning, and troubleshooting phases.
  • Ensure compliance with industry standards, client requirements, and company QA/QC processes.
  • Participate in project meetings and site visits to gather field data and verify design implementation.
  • Review vendor drawings and specifications for relays, RTUs, control panels, and related equipment.
  • Support the development of cost estimates, project proposals, and schedules for protection and controls projects.
  • Mentor junior engineers, technicians, and drafters, providing technical guidance and quality reviews.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field (Power Systems focus preferred).
  • 5+ years of experience in protection and controls design for high-voltage substations or transmission/distribution systems (experience range can be adjusted to your needs).
  • Strong understanding of protective relaying principles, control systems, and substation automation.
  • Experience developing one-line diagrams, three-line diagrams, AC/DC schematics, panel layouts, wiring diagrams, and related documentation.
  • Proficiency with protective relay coordination and settings, SCADA systems, and communication protocols (DNP3, IEC 61850, Modbus, etc.).
  • Familiarity with industry standards such as IEEE, NESC, NEMA, and ANSI.
  • Experience using AutoCAD, MicroStation, or other electrical design tools.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills with a high attention to detail.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to collaborate across multidisciplinary teams.
  • Professional Engineer (P.E.) license or eligibility for future licensure preferred.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and deliver quality results within schedule and budget constraints.
