Summary

Lead the next generation of building-services design

Buro Happold is seeking an Associate Electrical Engineer to provide technical, project and client leadership within our growing US MEP practice. The preferred candidate location is Atlanta, GA; however, we are open to considering those that reside in Raleigh/Durham, NC or Miami, FL.

You will lead electrical delivery on complex multidisciplinary projects, guide teams through technical and project challenges, and build trusted relationships with clients, architects and collaborators. You will also help develop our people, strengthen our technical standards and support the continued growth of our MEP presence in the South.

This role is suited to an experienced engineer ready to combine hands-on technical leadership with responsibility for project outcomes, clients, commercial performance and team development.

Here at Buro Happold, expect the exceptional.

You will contribute to ambitious projects, collaborate with specialists across disciplines and locations, and continue developing in an inclusive practice where different perspectives strengthen our work. Wherever your Buro Happold career takes you, it will be anything but ordinary.

Your next role

As an Associate Electrical Engineer, you will:
  • Lead electrical engineering delivery on significant and complex multidisciplinary building projects.
  • Establish the electrical design approach, scope, deliverables, program, resourcing and quality plan.
  • Direct the design of systems such as utility services, normal and emergency power distribution, lighting and controls, grounding, fire-alarm interfaces and other building electrical systems.
  • Review and approve calculations, drawings, models, specifications, reports and technical recommendations in accordance with assigned authority.
  • Ensure that electrical designs comply with applicable codes, standards, contractual requirements and Buro Happold quality procedures.
  • Coordinate closely with clients, architects, contractors, utilities and internal engineering disciplines.
  • Act as a trusted technical adviser, communicating complex issues and recommendations clearly to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Manage electrical project resources and monitor fees, hours, forecasts, schedules, change and delivery risk.
  • Support project managers in delivering multidisciplinary projects, and act as project manager where appropriate to your experience and assignment.
  • Lead electrical input during construction through RFIs, submittals, site observations, commissioning coordination and resolution of field issues.
  • Plan and undertake technical reviews, providing constructive direction to project teams.
  • Lead, mentor and support electrical engineers and designers, including work allocation, coaching, feedback and professional-development planning.
  • Contribute to recruitment, onboarding, technical training and succession development for the local team.
  • Support proposals, interviews, fee development and client-development activities.
  • Identify opportunities for repeat work and additional services while protecting client interests and project outcomes.
  • Contribute to local market visibility, technical initiatives and the continued development of Buro Happold's Southeast MEP practice.
  • Collaborate with specialists across Buro Happold to advance high-performance, resilient, electrified and lower-carbon design.

Your skills and experience

Required:
  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, architectural engineering or a closely related discipline, or an equivalent recognized qualification.
  • Approximately 8 years or more of progressively responsible experience designing electrical systems for buildings.
  • Active Professional Engineer license in at least one US jurisdiction, with the ability to secure additional state licensure where required.
  • Demonstrated experience leading electrical delivery on multidisciplinary projects.
  • Strong knowledge of applicable US electrical, building, energy and life-safety codes and standards.
  • Experience managing project scope, resources, schedules, fees and technical quality.
  • Experience developing and maintaining client and architect relationships.
  • Ability to lead, delegate, review and develop the work of engineers and designers.
  • Proficiency with Revit/BIM workflows and familiarity with relevant electrical-analysis tools.
  • Strong written, verbal, presentation and negotiation skills.

Preferred:
  • Experience leading projects in one or more sectors such as higher education, science and technology, cultural, commercial, aviation, transportation or sports.
  • Experience preparing proposals, fees and interview materials.
  • Evidence of contributing to repeat work, market development or professional-industry activity.
  • Experience with complex power distribution, resilient systems, electrification, renewable integration or high-performance buildings.
  • LEED AP, WELL AP or another relevant sustainability credential.

We recognize that strong candidates develop through different career paths. If you meet most of the requirements and can demonstrate the leadership, judgment and technical depth needed for the role, we encourage you to apply.

What we offer:
  • Anticipated base salary: $115,000-$155,000, determined by factors including location, relevant skills, professional licensure, leadership capability and experience.
  • Generous benefits package.
  • Annual discretionary bonus.
  • Four weeks of paid time off in addition to ten paid holidays.
  • 401(k) with company match.
  • Hybrid working and summer hours.
  • Reimbursement for eligible professional licenses, renewals and examination fees.
  • Access to a global network of engineers, specialists and project leaders.
  • Broad learning, leadership and professional-development opportunities.
  • Opportunities to participate in employee forums and resource groups supporting an inclusive workplace.
