Summary

Job Description:

Our Opportunity:

Chewy Vet Care (CVC) is building a platform-driven ecosystem to power veterinary services across clinics, digital experiences, and pharmacy. We are looking for an Associate Director of Engineering to lead high-impact initiatives across clinic platforms, integrations, and AI-enabled capabilities as we scale both organically and through acquisitions such as Modern Animal.

This role will drive the transition from system-centric architectures to a unified, platform-first model that enables scalability, consistency, and innovation across the ecosystem.

What You'll Do:
  • Lead multiple engineering teams building core CVC platforms (Scheduling, Rx, Records, Payments, Inventory)
  • Drive platform-first architecture and API-driven integrations across PIMS (Rhapsody, Claude) and Chewy systems
  • Partner with Product, Data, and Clinical teams to deliver end-to-end solutions across clinic and customer journeys
  • Own execution of key initiatives supporting:
    • Organic growth (new clinics, capabilities)
    • Inorganic growth (acquisitions, PIMS integrations)
  • Build and scale AI-enabled capabilities (copilots, automation, decision support) across clinical and operational workflows
  • Establish best practices for system design, observability, reliability, and security
  • Improve developer velocity through reusable platforms and shared services
  • Mentor and grow engineering managers and senior engineers

Key Responsibilities:
  • Define and execute engineering strategy aligned with CVC's platform and AI vision
  • Lead large-scale system design and architectural decisions across distributed systems
  • Drive standardization of APIs, data models, and integration patterns
  • Partner cross-functionally with:
    • Product
    • Data / AI
    • Pharmacy / Supply Chain (HCO)
    • Clinic Operations
  • Manage delivery, timelines, and execution across multiple workstreams
  • Build a strong engineering culture focused on ownership, quality, and impact

What You'll Need:
  • 10+ years of software engineering experience
  • 3+ years in engineering leadership (managing managers preferred)
  • Experience building and scaling distributed systems and platforms
  • Strong background in API-first, event-driven architectures
  • Experience with cloud platforms (AWS preferred)
  • Proven ability to lead large, cross-functional initiatives

Bonus:
  • Experience in healthcare, pharmacy, or regulated environments
  • Experience integrating with third-party systems (e.g., PIMS, ERP, external partners)
  • Experience with acquisitions or multi-system integration
  • Familiarity with data platforms, MDM, and analytics
  • Exposure to AI/ML-driven products or workflow automation

Why This Role Matters:

This role is critical to enabling Chewy Vet Care's growth by:
  • Building a scalable platform that supports multiple clinic models and systems
  • Reducing system fragmentation and integration complexity
  • Enabling AI-driven workflows and operational efficiency
  • Delivering a seamless, unified experience for pet parents and clinicians

The base salary range for this role is $186,500 - $265,000.00.
  • The specific salary offered to a candidate may be influenced by a variety of factors including but not limited to the candidate's relevant experience, education, and work location. In addition, this position is eligible for 401k and a new hire and annual equity grant. C08+ positions may also be eligible for annual bonus.

We offer different types of insurance and benefits, such as medical/Rx, vision, dental, life, disability, hospital indemnity, critical illness, and accident. We offer parental leave, family services benefits, backup dependent care, flexible spending accounts, telemedicine, pet adoption reimbursement, employee assistance program, and many discounts including 10% off pet insurance and 20% off at Chewy.com.
