Role Overview
The Systems Operations Engineer provides hands-on technical support within a technology organization, focusing on the stability, performance, and availability of enterprise systems and applications. This role supports complex technical issues across applications, middleware, databases, and infrastructure, ensuring systems operate reliably and in compliance with quality, security, and regulatory standards.
The ideal candidate is a strong troubleshooter with solid Linux and middleware experience, capable of supporting production systems, participating in releases and migrations, and identifying opportunities for process and performance improvement.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide technical support for complex issues related to applications, systems, databases, and other technology products and services
- Diagnose, troubleshoot, and restore system services and data using appropriate diagnostic tools
- Participate in system migrations, upgrades, installations, and configurations from development through production
- Support deployments and release activities, including production readiness and validation
- Evaluate service level agreements (SLAs) and identify gaps in existing support or technology processes
- Write and execute queries to extract and validate data as needed
- Assist with project sizing and effort estimation
- Maintain and update technical documentation, procedures, and support materials
- Assist with training and knowledge transfer activities
- Troubleshoot network, hardware, and software issues following established guidelines and escalation paths
- Participate in test script creation and execution
- Maintain accurate change, incident, and issue logs
- Analyze system performance trends and recommend process and operational improvements
Quality, Security & Compliance
- Understand and adhere to quality, security, and compliance requirements for supported systems
- Review system changes to assess and mitigate risk to production environments
- Participate in testing, maintenance, and updates of business continuity and disaster recovery plans
Required Skills & Qualifications
- Strong working knowledge of Linux
- Strong experience supporting Tomcat and other middleware platforms
- Proven troubleshooting and root-cause analysis skills in production environments
- Experience supporting enterprise applications and systems
Preferred Skills
- Experience with ServiceNow (incident, change, and problem management)
- Monitoring and logging tools such as Splunk and Grafana
- Data analysis and reporting using Excel and Power BI
- Scripting or automation experience using Python
- Familiarity with system performance monitoring and alerting
Soft Skills
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate across technical and non-technical teams
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, production support environment
