Position Summary & Responsibilities: Position Summary: This Engineering Intern position is located in Topeka, at the Eisenhower State Office Building, and is within the Bureau of Transportation Safety.
Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following: - Project Evaluation and Analyses : Supports the Bureau's efforts to conduct data-driven decision making. Supports evaluations of various programs, subprograms and projects associated with safety funding. Supports statistical analysis and geospatial analysis to determine effectiveness of programs and potential for improvement. Supports program evaluations for the Bureau including conducting cost-benefit analysis, cost-effectiveness analysis, or lives-saved analysis. The evaluations are used to determine effectiveness of dollars spent, countermeasures used, as well as other implementation considerations.
- Safety Conscious Planning : Uses data and reports from available KDOT databases and programs, to identify the most common crash occurring on different classes of Kansas roads, especially those crashes resulting in fatalities and serious injuries. Works with statistical data and geospatial data to draw conclusions of the analyses. Supports the development and management of the safety needs list including identification of engineering solutions and countermeasures and implementation tracking.
- Research : Documents current transportation safety practices, tools, and new developments and provides recommendations to the Planning and Engineering Section Manager, supports -related research for KDOT. Explore KDOT data tools and document use cases within the agency and among stakeholders.
- Strategic Highway Safety Plan : Supports the implementation of the State Highway Safety Plan, or Drive To Zero (DTZ) Plan for the State of Kansas, including strategies from the Safer Roads, Safer Speeds, and/or Safer Vehicles strategy teams. The DTZ Plan focuses on substantially reducing traffic-related fatalities and injuries on public roads in Kansas.
Qualifications: Minimum Qualifications: - Enrollment in a Bachelor's or Master's program in Engineering, or equivalent program.
Preferred Qualifications: - Understanding of and fluency in software programs including Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, and Word; Geographic Information Systems; and/or other statistical analysis tools.
- Knowledge of transportation planning, engineering, and/or transportation safety.
- Understanding of how to use transportation data to diagnose problem areas and identify solutions.
- Familiarity with databases and statistical analysis.
- Experience in written, visual, and oral communication of complex topics.
- Ability to develop effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
