Role: Senior Mainframe Systems Programmer

Senior Mainframe Systems Programmer to provide technical leadership and oversight within a large enterprise mainframe environment.

This role combines deep mainframe systems and infrastructure expertise with responsibility for overseeing external service providers. The ideal candidate has 10+ years of mainframe systems programming experience and has progressed into a technical leadership role while remaining closely involved with mainframe technology and operations.

Position Description:

• Provide technical leadership and oversight for an enterprise mainframe environment.
• Oversee third-party providers responsible for mainframe infrastructure and operational support.
• Monitor system activity, performance and operational trends to identify issues and opportunities for improvement.
• Coordinate system changes, upgrades, maintenance activities and software releases.
• Serve as a senior technical escalation point for mainframe infrastructure issues and provide direction during production incidents.
• Partner with application, infrastructure and operations teams on mainframe-related initiatives and troubleshooting.
• Support performance optimization, capacity planning, storage administration and other infrastructure activities.
• Evaluate new mainframe technologies, tools and capabilities and recommend improvements.
• Identify opportunities to automate and streamline mainframe operations.
• Develop or enhance mainframe utilities and operational processes when needed.
• Support the installation, maintenance and implementation of mainframe system software and utilities.
• Establish and promote infrastructure standards, governance and operational best practices.
• Contribute to technology roadmaps and longer-term mainframe strategy.
• Develop technical documentation, procedures and operational reporting as needed.

Required Experience:

• 10+ years of mainframe systems programming experience within enterprise environments.
• Strong experience supporting mainframe operating systems, system software, utilities and related infrastructure technologies.
• Hands-on background installing, maintaining, troubleshooting and optimizing mainframe system software.
• Experience overseeing outsourced mainframe services or managed service providers.
• Strong vendor management experience with responsibility for service levels, performance expectations and contractual commitments.
• Experience developing, reviewing or working with Statements of Work (SOWs).
• Strong working knowledge of ITIL practices, particularly incident, problem and change management.
• Experience establishing technical standards, procedures, governance and mainframe operational best practices.
• Demonstrated ability to provide technical leadership and solve complex infrastructure problems.
• Experience contributing to infrastructure strategy, technology planning and technical roadmaps.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities in a complex enterprise technology environment.
• Strong collaboration skills with experience working across infrastructure, application, operations and business teams.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate complex technical concepts to business and technology leadership.

Education

• Bachelor’s degree in Information Systems, Computer Science, Business or a related field required.
• Master’s degree or other advanced education is a plus.
