Job Title Data Scientist

6-month contract +

Fully remote (there are a few states they cannot work in CA & OH being a few, working on getting the list)

Client is seeking a senior-level, hands-on Data Scientist to support high-impact operational, clinical, and financial initiatives across the health system. This is a pragmatic, applied data science role not academic or research-focused centered on building, validating, and evaluating statistical and machine learning models that directly influence healthcare quality, efficiency, and revenue.

The successful candidate will serve as a trusted analytics partner to clinical, operational, and executive stakeholders, independently validating vendor solutions, comparing competing data sources, and translating complex findings into actionable insights for senior leadership.

This role requires strong technical execution, sound judgment, and the ability to clearly articulate what problem is being solved, why it matters, and how success should be measured.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform hands-on data science and statistical modeling (individual contributor, keyboard-on role)
  • Develop, evaluate, and iterate on models using applied statistical techniques, including:
    • Sensitivity and specificity
    • ROC curves and AUC
    • Prevalence and performance metrics
  • Work extensively in R (required) and Python
    • Maintain and enhance existing R scripts and models developed by prior incumbents
    • Candidates with lighter R experience are acceptable if able to ramp quickly
  • Validate vendor claims by recreating and benchmarking models internally
    • Example: comparing multiple vendor falls-risk models to assess predictive performance and downstream outcomes
    • Present findings to leadership to inform vendor selection and investment decisions
  • Compare and evaluate competing data sources, tools, and methodologies to determine the best-performing solutions
  • Support analytics use cases across clinical, financial, and operational domains
  • Partner closely with:
    • Biomedical analytics teams
    • University-based data science collaborators
    • Cross-functional clinical, operational, and administrative stakeholders
  • Translate complex analytical findings into clear, concise, and actionable insights for non-technical audiences, including senior executives

Immediate / Day-One Focus

  • Assume ownership of Charge Guard, a homegrown R-based analytics product designed to:
    • Review medical records, CPT codes, and patient notes
    • Identify missed revenue opportunities due to under-coding
    • Apply CPT-based modeling with constraints on how many codes can be added at once
  • Lead model training, iteration, validation, and delivery of actionable outputs that directly support revenue integrity initiatives

Required Experience & Skills

  • Healthcare data science experience is required
  • Strong hands-on expertise in:
    • R (required)
    • Python
    • Statistical modeling and applied mathematics
  • Deep understanding of healthcare data, workflows, and systems
  • Proven experience evaluating whether a model, tool, or initiative is worth pursuing
    • Demonstrates judgment and prioritization; understands that not every problem needs a solution
  • Strong critical thinking skills, with the ability to articulate why specific statistical approaches are being applied
  • Comfortable operating in ambiguous environments with varied and evolving use cases
  • Excellent communication skills, with a demonstrated ability to present findings clearly and confidently to non-technical and senior leadership audiences

Nice-to-Haves

  • Epic experience or Epic training (strong plus)
    • Ability to independently access and work with Epic data
  • Familiarity with:
    • Vendor healthcare analytics tools
    • Operational and financial healthcare metrics
  • Experience working with Large Language Models (LLMs)
    • Familiarity with Azure-based environments
    • Experience integrating industry LLMs via APIs for custom development

Ideal Candidate Profile

  • A fast learner and strong critical thinker who is thoughtful, patient, and pragmatic
  • Comfortable navigating tradeoffs and making informed decisions about what is and is not worth pursuing
  • Able to clearly explain:
    • What the problem is
    • Why it matters
    • How impact and success should be measured
  • Highly effective communicator who can translate complex analytics into digestible, executive-ready insights
  • Understands that this is a fully operational role, focused on delivering measurable value, improving outcomes, and increasing profitability
  • No research or publishing responsibilities; this role is not academically oriented
