Description

SAIC has an opening for an organized and motivated Senior Mechanical Engineer who is looking for an opportunity to grow with our company as we continue to expand our Naval Undersea Warfare Center at the Propulsion Test Facility to support the team in Newport, RI.

The ideal candidate should have experience supporting various projects at all levels showcasing leadership qualities and attributes, as well as project management skills. The candidate should have the ability to discuss projects they have supported and/or led. Candidate should be able to self-manage/self-direct projects, and communicate regularly with customers, engineers, logisticians and technicians.

Job Duties:
  • Must be able to lead multiple high-profile projects which involves interfacing with the customer to define key test requirements, sourcing and interfacing with multiple suppliers / vendors, establishing all supporting project documentation including Analysis of alternatives, technical design packages, presentations, test requirements and operational results.
  • The candidate will need a broad engineering skill-set, well-developed work habits, an enthusiasm for the work, the willingness to get hands-on with the projects when required, an eagerness to learn new things, and the ability to work through challenging projects without extensive oversight.
  • The individual will be responsible for leadership throughout the entire project from customer concept to post-test analysis/ facility approval. These projects will broadly include the design and fabrication of components and interfaces for electrical and mechanical systems for both test items and facility infrastructure.
  • Technical writing and engineering documentation proficiency is paramount in order to support the development of Technical Data Packages (TDPs), project schedules, Analysis of alternatives, and presentations.
  • The candidate will have to be detail oriented and possess excellent communication skills to ensure all aspects of the project remain on time and budget while meeting all requirements.


Qualifications

Qualifications:
  • B.S. in Mechanical Engineering and nine (9) or more years of experience OR M.S. in Mechanical Engineering and seven (7) or more years of experience.
  • Must have the ability to obtain and maintain SECRET level clearance.
  • Must have experience leading multiple projects to completion.
  • Experience with most of the following:
    • Execution of large-scale projects using formal Project Management and or Systems Engineering practices.
    • Extensive knowledge and understanding of mechanical and electrical systems is necessary.
    • Experience with manufacturing and an understanding of ASME Sec VIII & Sec IX Code Standards is preferred.
    • Proficiency with facility process instrumentation and control systems including PLCs, and PID control.
    • Experience with National Instrument's hardware and software systems or other data acquisition systems.
    • Experience with equipment / systems calibration preferred.
    • Proficiency in CAD software for the development of 3D models and 2D drawings and templates, preferably SolidWorks.
    • Experience developing bills of material (BOMs) for complex assemblies to incorporate on 2D drawings and to use as a costing and tracking tool during projects.
    • Experience creating fabrication drawings, including the use of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
    • Knowledge of best design practices to prevent issues during the fabrication phase of the project.
    • Must be highly motivated and have excellent problem-solving skills.
    • Must demonstrate strong organizational skills and the ability to work on multiple tasks concurrently with changing deadlines and priorities.
    • Must be able to work in a customer facing team environment while completing tasks in an unsupervised and self-directed fashion.
    • Proficiency in technical writing for all forms of test documentation is necessary.
