Senior Data Visualization & Grafana Engineer

Role Overview
We are looking for a Senior Data Visualization & Grafana Engineer to design and improve analytical and operational dashboards used by business and technical users.
Grafana is our primary visualization platform. While Grafana is traditionally associated with observability and system monitoring, we also use it to visualize operational data, trends, events, KPIs, historical information, and analytical insights.
The ideal candidate combines strong data visualization and analytical thinking with hands-on Grafana experience. We are open to candidates who have built sophisticated analytical solutions using other visualization platforms and have solid experience working with Grafana.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, build, and enhance Grafana dashboards for operational and analytical use cases.
- Work directly with business and technical stakeholders to understand requirements and translate them into meaningful visualizations.
- Build dashboards for:
- Real-time and historical trends
- Operational KPIs and metrics
- Time-series and event-based data
- Alerts and exceptions
- Summary and detailed analytical views
- Filtering, navigation, and drilldowns
- Improve existing dashboards with a focus on usability, performance, consistency, and user experience.
- Determine the most effective visualization for different types of data and business questions.
- Develop Grafana variables, transformations, calculations, queries, filters, links, and interactive dashboard capabilities.
- Troubleshoot dashboard, query, data-source, and performance issues.
- Work with engineering teams to understand underlying data models and improve how data is presented to users.
- Develop reusable dashboard templates, visualization standards, and best practices.
Required Qualifications
- Strong experience building data visualizations and analytical dashboards.
- Hands-on experience developing dashboards in Grafana.
- Experience with one or more additional visualization/analytics platforms such as Power BI, Tableau, Looker, Kibana, or similar tools.
- Strong SQL and data-querying skills.
- Experience working with time-series, event-based, operational, or high-volume datasets.
- Good understanding of dashboard design, data visualization principles, and user experience.
- Ability to take business requirements and independently translate them into effective dashboards.
- Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to troubleshoot data and visualization issues.
Preferred Qualifications
- Advanced Grafana experience including variables, transformations, drilldowns, dashboard linking, annotations, and performance optimization.
- Experience with time-series databases such as InfluxDB, Amazon Timestream, Prometheus, or similar technologies.
- Experience with AWS or other cloud platforms.
- Experience integrating visualization platforms with APIs and multiple data sources.
- Experience with IoT, telemetry, transportation, manufacturing, or other operational data environments.
- Experience with JavaScript/TypeScript or Grafana plugin development is a plus.
What We Are Looking For
We are not looking only for a traditional observability engineer who has primarily built infrastructure monitoring dashboards.
We are looking for someone who understands how to present complex data in a way that helps users identify trends, investigate issues, understand what is happening, and make informed decisions.
Deep analytical dashboard experience in Power BI, Tableau, Looker, or similar platforms combined with solid Grafana experience is acceptable. The ability to understand the data, work with users, and design an effective analytical experience is more important than expertise in every individual Grafana feature.
