Purpose

Supports project teams with basic technical tasks, data collection, and documentation while gaining hands-on experience in applying engineering principles and contributing to project delivery.

Responsibilities

Leadership and Direction
  • Perform work under direct supervision of an experienced professional and follow established procedures and clearly defined processes.

At the Operational and Company Level
  • Interact with multiple departments and peers within the organization and participate in intern program learning and development opportunities.

Do the Work
  • Assist with design of project systems and features in accordance with current code requirements and sound engineering principles, under the direction of a senior engineer or project manager.
  • Complete design and drafting work using computer-aided design (CAD) software, and assist in producing construction documents that meet milestone schedules and budget.
  • Apply standard engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria to assigned tasks.
  • Conduct field observation visits and assist with inspections and assessments to document existing conditions.
  • Assist with preparing reports, correspondence, technical specifications, contract documents, and estimates.
  • Observe and participate in construction administration activities (RFIs, submittals, shop drawings, change order proposals).
  • Communicate effectively with engineers, project managers, and occasionally clients.
  • Review and learn the codes and standards applicable to your discipline.
  • Depending on your discipline and office assignment, work may include:
    • Civil: site grading, erosion and sediment control design, stormwater management design, water treatment, traffic analysis, and/or utility design.
    • Structural: structural analysis, detailing, inspections, and condition assessments.
    • Mechanical (HVAC): design of mechanical systems in accordance with applicable codes.Electrical: design of power, lighting, and low-voltage electrical systems in accordance with applicable codes.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent commensurate experience required.
  • Enrolled in community college courses, a college degree program, or formal continuing education program.
  • Focus on civil, electrical, mechanical, or structural engineering (or related discipline) is strongly preferred.
  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Must hold a valid state driver's license and successfully pass a motor vehicle check.

Physical Demands and Working Environment

  • Partially indoor professional office environment which may include exposure to bright/dim light, noise, fumes, odors, and traffic.
  • Partially outdoor work environment which may include exposure to adverse weather conditions, varying temperatures, excessive noise, and/or potential hazards.
  • Mobility around an office environment.
  • Frequent and prolonged use of standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.
  • Mobility around a job/construction site to include walking, bending, crawling, climbing, squatting, or kneeling and wearing of required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Primarily local travel during the business day.
  • Occasional lifting or carrying up to 50 pounds.
  • Occasional pushing or pulling up to 50 pounds.
  • Occasional reaching outward or above shoulder.
