Job Title: Senior Mainframe Software Engineer

Responsibilities and Duties:
This senior-level position is an integral member of an agile software engineering team responsible for designing, developing, enhancing, and supporting business-critical enterprise applications. The engineer will provide deep mainframe expertise for high-volume, file-based financial processing and will participate throughout the software delivery lifecycle, from requirements and technical design through development, testing, implementation, and production support.
- Software Design and Engineering: Create engineering specifications and technical designs for mainframe applications, batch programs, interfaces, data-transformation processes, and supporting components.
- Mainframe Development: Design, develop, test, implement, and maintain senior-level mainframe solutions using COBOL, JCL, z/OS tools, batch-processing patterns, and flat-file interfaces.
- Financial Data Processing: Maintain and enhance rules that standardize source data, map financial attributes and General Ledger accounts, validate required information, and transform transactions into client-ready financial feeds.
- Interface and Data Support: Develop and support inbound and outbound file processing, interface extracts and passbacks, translation and validation tables, control-total files, journal-entry outputs, and detail and summary files.
- Production Support: Diagnose and resolve production abends, failed batch jobs, file-processing errors, data discrepancies, mapping defects, balancing failures, and reconciliation issues. Perform safe restart and recovery activities and communicate impacts and status promptly.
- Controls and Auditability: Preserve data integrity and financial-control requirements through duplicate-file checks, record and control-file balancing, traceability, reconciliation, and evidence needed for audit or compliance reviews.
- Integration Delivery: Partner with Finance, Accounting, Business Systems Analysts, data and integration teams, operations, architecture, testing, and product teams to deliver new interfaces, financial feeds, platform changes, and client or line-of-business onboarding.
- Software Quality: Write code that adheres to coding standards, perform code reviews, develop unit and integration tests, and follow source-control, build, deployment, testing, and change-management practices.
- Agile Execution: Participate in scrum ceremonies, sprint planning, backlog refinement, estimation, story creation, definition of done, acceptance criteria, task creation, status updates, and final execution of software changes.
- Technical Leadership: Evaluate technical alternatives, identify feasibility and operational trade-offs, safeguard functionality and performance, communicate blockers, document support procedures, and mentor associate and intermediate engineers.
- Additional Responsibilities: Participate in scheduled production support and after-hours implementation or incident coverage as required. Perform other duties as assigned or requested.

Required Qualifications:
- Education: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Computer and Information Science, or a closely related field, or equivalent relevant experience consistent with company hiring standards.
- Experience: At least 5 years of professional software engineering experience designing, building, deploying, and supporting scalable, highly available, or business-critical systems.
- Senior-level knowledge of mainframe systems, demonstrated through substantial hands-on experience with z/OS application development, production batch operations, troubleshooting, implementation, and support.
- Strong hands-on experience developing and maintaining COBOL programs and JCL, including job streams, file-based processing, dependency handling, abnormal-end diagnosis, restart and recovery, and production implementation.
- Experience supporting large-scale batch applications that process financial, accounting, claims, billing, payment, or similarly controlled enterprise data.
- Experience with algorithm and data-structure fundamentals, system design, technical feasibility evaluation, design patterns, and maintainable application architecture.
- Experience translating business requirements, technical specifications, prototypes, interface definitions, or user stories into working software solutions.

- Skills/Competencies:
- Advanced proficiency in COBOL and JCL for enterprise mainframe batch development and support.
- Strong understanding of z/OS, mainframe datasets, flat-file layouts, record processing, job dependencies, control files, batch scheduling, operational monitoring, and failure recovery.
- Working knowledge of SQL and relational data concepts. Experience with Oracle or PeopleSoft-related tables and query tools is beneficial for financial translation and validation processing.
- Ability to analyze complex data flows across source extracts, translation processes, passback files, control totals, detail and summary outputs, data-warehouse feeds, and General Ledger interfaces.
- Knowledge of professional software-engineering practices across the full SDLC, including coding standards, unit testing, code reviews, source control, build and deployment processes, operations, and technical documentation.
- Experience with Agile/Scrum delivery and work-management tools such as Jira, RTC, or Digital.ai Agility.
- Strong production-support, root-cause-analysis, problem-solving, and incident-communication skills.
- Ability to collaborate with technical and non-technical partners and translate financial or operational requirements into reliable technical solutions.
- Ability and willingness to mentor less-experienced engineers and serve as a senior technical resource.
- Certifications: None required.
- Other Requirements: Travel requirement: 0% to 25%. Ability to support planned implementations, batch-processing windows, and critical production incidents outside standard business hours when required. Must comply with applicable privacy, information-security, confidentiality, HIPAA, Code of Business Conduct, legal, regulatory, and training requirements.

Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Systems, or a related field.
- 7 or more years working with varied technology systems, designing solutions, or developing applications in healthcare, financial services, or another highly controlled industry.
- Prior experience supporting General Ledger, accounting, reconciliation, journal-entry, claims, billing, payment, or financial-reporting applications.
- Experience with a mainframe-based financial translation or interface application. Prior experience with the specific in-house application is not required.
- Experience with Oracle or PeopleSoft data structures, Informatica or enterprise data-integration processes, managed file-transfer patterns, data-warehouse integrations, and enterprise job scheduling.
- Experience with translation tables, validation rules, financial mappings, balancing controls, duplicate-file checks, reconciliation, and audit evidence.
- Knowledge of healthcare payer data and financial feeds.
- Exposure to Java, Python, JavaScript, C/C++, or other programming languages that support broader engineering work and modernization initiatives.
