Conversion Salary: $77,600 - $116,400
Job Summary

We are seeking a Mechanical Engineer to support the design, development, integration, and testing of ruggedized electronic hardware for defense and mission-critical applications. This role will work within a multidisciplinary engineering team and contribute across the full product lifecycle, from concept development through production and validation testing.

The ideal candidate will have experience in electro-mechanical design, electronics packaging, and hardware development, along with strong communication and problem-solving skills.
Responsibilities
  • Support the design, analysis, documentation, and integration of electro-mechanical systems.
  • Participate in all phases of product development, including requirements definition, concept design, detailed design, production support, and environmental testing.
  • Develop innovative and cost-effective solutions to complex engineering challenges.
  • Create and release engineering drawings, models, specifications, and technical documentation.
  • Present technical designs and analysis during internal and customer design reviews.
  • Support manufacturing, suppliers, and engineering change activities.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including systems, electrical, manufacturing, and program management.
  • Contribute to process improvements, knowledge sharing, and mentoring activities.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or Aerospace Engineering with 2+ years of experience in electronics packaging, or a Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or Aerospace Engineering.
  • Experience in hardware development and electro-mechanical packaging.
  • Experience in one or more of the following areas:
    • Thermal analysis
    • Structural analysis
    • Microelectronics design
    • Opto-mechanical design
    • Environmental testing
  • Proficiency with 3D CAD software (Siemens NX preferred) and product data management systems.
  • Experience leading small to mid-sized engineering projects or teams.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and determine technical approaches with limited supervision.
  • U.S. Citizenship required.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Secret Security Clearance or higher.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or Aerospace Engineering.
  • Experience with ANSYS or similar engineering analysis tools.
  • Knowledge of opto-mechanical systems.
  • Familiarity with military and commercial engineering standards and specifications.
  • GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing) experience.
  • Experience leading integrated product teams and mentoring engineers.
  • Understanding of project management principles and earned value management (EVM).
  • Experience designing, manufacturing, and integrating electronic assemblies, including material selection and commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) components.
  • Experience supporting technical proposals and cost estimates.
  • Demonstrated success driving process improvements and knowledge-transfer initiatives.
Work Environment
  • Onsite position in Rolling Meadows, Illinois.
  • Ability to sit or remain stationary for extended periods.
  • Frequent use of hands and fingers for computer-based work.
  • Position is contingent upon contract funding and successful clearance eligibility.
