Overview

A Reliability Engineer is responsible for ensuring that equipment, systems, and processes perform consistently and dependably over their intended lifecycle. This role focuses on improving asset reliability, reducing downtime, and implementing long-term engineering solutions that enhance performance, safety, and cost efficiency.

Key Responsibilities

1. Asset Reliability & Performance

  • Monitor equipment performance and analyze failure data to identify trends, root causes, and improvement opportunities.
  • Develop and implement reliability improvement plans for critical equipment.
  • Participate in Root Cause Analysis (RCA) using methods such as 5-Why, Fishbone, or FMEA.

2. Predictive & Preventive Maintenance

  • Design and optimize predictive maintenance strategies (vibration analysis, thermography, oil analysis, NDE Inspection, etc.).
  • Support maintenance teams in developing preventive maintenance procedures.
  • Maintain reliability models and equipment histories.

3. Engineering Analysis & Optimization

  • Evaluate equipment design and recommend modifications to improve reliability or reduce life-cycle costs.
  • Perform risk assessments and reliability modeling (e.g. RBM, TPM, RCM, etc).
  • Review system specifications to ensure alignment with reliability standards.

4. Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Work closely with maintenance, operations, engineering, and safety teams.
  • Provide technical support during equipment failures or downtime events.
  • Lead multidisciplinary meetings to implement reliability improvements.

5. Documentation & Reporting

  • Maintain accurate documentation of reliability programs, KPIs, and failure reports.
  • Track and report reliability metrics (MTBF, MTTR, OEE, downtime trends).
  • Develop and deliver reliability training for technicians and operations groups.


Required Skills & Qualifications

Technical Skills

  • Strong knowledge of reliability engineering principles (RCM, FMEA, RCA, TPM, RMB).

Advanced maintenance work process knowledge and experience

Advanced knowledge of parts inventory management, and mechanical/electrical equipment design reliability principles

Analytical, critical and problem-solving skills.

Troubleshooting Experience

Knowledge of engineering concepts such as lifecycle asset management, risk management and loss elimination.

Knowledge of Project Management Methodology

Knowledge of Rotating Equipment, Pressure Vessels, Valves and Piping Systems

Soft Skills

  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills.

Ability to collaborate across multi-functional teams

Ability to multitask and prioritize workloads

Possess self-management and critical thinking skills

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Industrial, or related field).
  • 3-7 years of experience in reliability, maintenance engineering, or similar role.
  • Certifications preferred:
    • Certified Reliability Engineer (CRE - ASQ)
    • Certified Maintenance & Reliability Professional (CMRP)


Typical Work Environment

  • Industrial or manufacturing facilities such as energy, chemical, aerospace, automotive, food processing, or utilities.
  • Some roles may require on-site inspections, audits, or field work.
