Systems Engineer (DevOps / Infrastructure as Code)

Location: Tulsa, OK (On Site)
Type: 6-Month Contract with Strong Likelihood of Extension
Experience: 7+ Years

About the Role

Join a 15-person Systems and Cybersecurity Engineering team supporting enterprise technology initiatives for a large Tulsa-based retailer. This role is focused on designing, building, and automating infrastructure that powers major business projects, from Azure modernization efforts to warehouse technology deployments.

This is a project-based engineering role, not an operations, support, or server administration position. You'll work across cloud, virtualization, identity, automation, and platform initiatives, building infrastructure as code and helping deliver new technology capabilities across the organization.

What You'll Do

  • Design, build, and manage infrastructure as code across Azure, VMware, and other enterprise platforms using Terraform, Git, and CI/CD pipelines
  • Translate high-level architecture into technical requirements and implementation plans
  • Represent engineering in cross-functional project meetings and collaborate with architecture, security, infrastructure, and business teams
  • Scope, estimate, plan, and execute your own work within agile project cycles
  • Integrate new technologies and vendor solutions with existing infrastructure, identity, and security standards
  • Support strategic initiatives such as Azure landing zones, warehouse technology rollouts, infrastructure modernization, and new platform deployments
  • Automate repetitive processes and improve operational efficiency through Infrastructure as Code and engineering best practices

Required Qualifications

  • 7+ years of hands-on experience in Infrastructure Engineering, Platform Engineering, Systems Engineering, or DevOps Engineering
  • Strong experience building and managing production infrastructure using Terraform, Git, and CI/CD pipelines
  • Experience deploying and automating Azure infrastructure using Infrastructure as Code tools such as Terraform, ARM, or Bicep
  • Experience with VMware or similar enterprise virtualization platforms
  • Experience supporting cross-functional implementation projects in large, fast-paced environments
  • Ability to work independently, navigate ambiguity, and drive projects forward with limited oversight
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work directly with technical and non-technical stakeholders

Preferred Qualifications

  • Azure Landing Zones
  • HashiCorp Packer
  • HashiCorp Vault
  • Identity and access management integrations, including Okta and SailPoint
  • Experience supporting both cloud and on-premises infrastructure environments
  • Exposure to modern platform engineering and automation practices

What We're Looking For

We're seeking a well-rounded infrastructure engineer who enjoys solving a variety of technology challenges. The ideal candidate is comfortable moving between cloud platforms, virtualization, automation, identity integrations, and infrastructure modernization projects as business needs evolve.

This role is best suited for someone who enjoys building and automating systems, not someone focused primarily on day-to-day operations, support, or server administration.

Qualifying Questions

  1. Have you used Terraform, Git, and CI/CD pipelines to build and manage production infrastructure in Azure?
  2. Have you designed or implemented infrastructure as code across Azure, VMware, or similar enterprise environments?
  3. Have you served as a lead engineer on cross-functional implementation projects, translating requirements into technical deliverables and managing your own project work?
  4. Do you have 7+ years of hands-on Infrastructure, Platform, Systems, or DevOps Engineering experience?
  5. Do you live in or near Tulsa and have the ability to work on site?

My only additional recommendation: If this is for the same manager, I'd consider changing the title from "Systems Engineer" to "Senior Systems Engineer (DevOps / Infrastructure as Code)". The role description reads more senior than a typical Systems Engineer and will better attract engineers with strong Terraform, Azure, VMware, and project ownership experience.
