Job Description

Description

Your passion belongs at UNC Health. Join more than 56,000 teammates working together to improve the health and well-being of the communities we serve across North Carolina.

Summary:

The HCS Senior Interoperability Developer leads the design, development, implementation, testing, optimization, and ongoing support of complex healthcare interoperability solutions across the health system. This position serves as a senior technical resource for the exchange of clinical, financial, and operational information between Epic and internal or external systems.

The Senior Interoperability Developer independently manages large and complex interface implementation projects through the full system development lifecycle. Responsibilities include gathering and evaluating interface requirements, developing technical designs, configuring and testing interfaces, coordinating integrated testing, supporting production deployments, troubleshooting complex issues, and maintaining reliable interface operations.

The ideal candidate has more than five years of healthcare interoperability experience, with extensive knowledge of HL7 interface development and support. Experience with Epic Bridges and the Infor Cloverleaf Integration Suite is preferred. Experience designing, implementing, or supporting FHIR-based APIs and other modern healthcare interoperability technologies is also preferred, with demonstrated experience independently delivering large and complex healthcare interface implementation projects.

This position requires the ability to work independently with limited supervision, manage competing priorities, make sound technical decisions, and collaborate effectively with application teams, clinical and operational stakeholders, vendors, and external healthcare organizations. The Senior Interoperability Developer also provides technical leadership, mentors less-experienced team members, and contributes to the development of reusable standards, documentation, and best practices.

Responsibilities:

Interface Design, Development, and Implementation

  • Independently lead large and complex healthcare interface implementation projects from requirements gathering through production deployment and stabilization.
  • Design, develop, configure, test, implement, and maintain HL7 interfaces that support the reliable exchange of clinical, financial, and operational information.
  • Develop and support interfaces using Epic Bridges and the Infor Cloverleaf Integration Suite.
  • Analyze interface requirements and translate business, clinical, and technical needs into scalable and supportable integration designs.
  • Develop or support FHIR APIs, web services, and other standards-based interoperability solutions when appropriate.
  • Create interface specifications, data mappings, transformation logic, test plans, implementation plans, support documentation, and operational procedures.
  • Coordinate unit, integrated, regression, and end-to-end testing with internal application teams, external organizations, and vendors.
Technical Leadership and Project Delivery

  • Serve as the senior technical resource for assigned interface projects and complex interoperability issues.
  • Independently manage technical activities, dependencies, risks, priorities, and deliverables across multiple concurrent projects.
  • Facilitate technical discussions and make recommendations regarding interface architecture, integration methods, message standards, data mappings, and implementation approaches.
  • Provide accurate estimates, communicate project status, identify risks or barriers, and escalate issues when leadership involvement is required.
  • Coordinate technical work with Epic application teams, infrastructure teams, vendors, external healthcare organizations, and other internal stakeholders.
  • Participate in vendor evaluations, technical assessments, and build-versus-buy decisions related to interoperability solutions.
Production Support and Optimization

  • Monitor, troubleshoot, and resolve complex interface, message-processing, data-transformation, and connectivity issues.
  • Perform root-cause analysis and implement sustainable corrective actions that improve interface reliability and reduce recurring production incidents.
  • Optimize interface performance, message routing, monitoring, alerting, and error-handling processes.
  • Support application upgrades, Epic releases, Cloverleaf upgrades, infrastructure changes, organizational implementations, and other activities that may affect interface processing.
  • Participate in an on-call rotation and provide extended support for major implementations, upgrades, and entity go-lives as required.
  • Ensure production solutions are scalable, reliable, recoverable, secure, and aligned with organizational standards.
Standards, Documentation, and Knowledge Sharing

  • Develop and maintain interface development standards, reusable technical components, implementation procedures, support documentation, and troubleshooting guides.
  • Apply established software development lifecycle, change management, release management, and IT service management practices.
  • Promote consistent use of HL7, FHIR, and other applicable healthcare interoperability standards.
  • Review technical solutions and interface designs for quality, maintainability, performance, and adherence to organizational standards.
  • Mentor junior developers and share technical knowledge with team members, application analysts, and other stakeholders.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives for interface development, testing, deployment, monitoring, and support processes.
Communication and Collaboration

  • Communicate technical information clearly and effectively to technical and nontechnical audiences.
  • Build productive working relationships with clinical, operational, technical, and vendor stakeholders.
  • Provide timely updates to management and project stakeholders regarding progress, risks, decisions, dependencies, and production issues.
  • Represent the interoperability team in project meetings, design sessions, implementation planning, incident reviews, and governance discussions.
  • Demonstrate professionalism, accountability, customer service, and alignment with UNC Health values.
