Position Overview

A well-established organization is seeking an experienced Director of Tax to lead its U.S. tax function while providing oversight and strategic guidance across key treasury activities.

This senior leadership position will be responsible for developing and executing tax strategies, maintaining compliance across federal, state, and local jurisdictions, and identifying opportunities to improve the organization''s overall tax position. The Director will also oversee core treasury responsibilities, support financing and liquidity initiatives, and serve as a trusted advisor to executive leadership and financial teams across the business.

The ideal candidate brings deep technical tax expertise, strong business judgment, and the leadership skills necessary to manage both internal professionals and external advisory relationships in a complex corporate environment.

Key Responsibilities

Tax Strategy, Planning & Compliance

  • Develop and implement tax strategies designed to optimize the organization''s U.S. tax position while maintaining full compliance with applicable laws and regulations.

  • Oversee federal, state, and local tax compliance, including the accurate and timely preparation and filing of required returns.

  • Identify and evaluate tax planning opportunities, savings initiatives, and potential areas of exposure across the business.

  • Lead the organization''s response to tax examinations and audits, working to effectively resolve issues and manage potential liabilities.

  • Monitor changes in tax laws and regulations and assess their potential impact on business operations and financial strategy.

  • Manage relationships with external tax advisors and coordinate with governmental authorities as necessary.

Business Advisory & Technical Leadership

  • Serve as a key tax advisor to executive leadership, finance teams, and business unit stakeholders.

  • Evaluate the tax implications of significant business transactions, organizational changes, and strategic initiatives.

  • Provide technical guidance on a range of transactional tax matters, including sales and use tax, property tax, fuel tax, and employment-related taxes.

  • Partner with accounting and finance personnel throughout the organization to promote consistent and appropriate tax treatment.

  • Translate complex tax matters into practical guidance for financial and operational stakeholders.

Treasury & Corporate Finance

  • Provide leadership and oversight for U.S. treasury activities, including cash management, liquidity planning, funding requirements, and credit facility administration.

  • Support the evaluation of borrowing requirements and the execution of financing arrangements.

  • Monitor compliance with applicable debt agreements and financing obligations.

  • Coordinate the timing and execution of additional funding needs to support ongoing business operations and strategic initiatives.

  • Partner with senior financial leadership on matters affecting liquidity, capital structure, and financial risk.

Leadership & Team Development

  • Lead and develop a corporate team responsible for tax and treasury activities.

  • Provide technical direction, mentorship, and ongoing professional development to team members.

  • Oversee external consulting relationships to ensure high-quality, cost-effective support.

  • Foster collaboration between tax, treasury, accounting, finance, and operational teams.

Governance & Executive Support

  • Support senior financial leadership in maintaining strong financial controls, regulatory compliance, and corporate governance practices.

  • Take on appropriate corporate governance responsibilities associated with the organization''s tax and treasury functions.

  • Provide strategic insight on tax, treasury, and financial matters that may affect broader organizational objectives.

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor''s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline.

  • Active CPA license.

  • 10–15 years of progressive tax experience, including significant experience within a corporate tax function, public accounting environment, or a combination of both.

  • Strong technical knowledge of U.S. federal, state, and local taxation.

  • Demonstrated experience leading complex tax compliance and planning activities.

  • Experience with corporate treasury functions, financing arrangements, and related financial obligations.

  • Proven ability to lead and develop teams while effectively managing external professional advisors.

  • Strong analytical, communication, problem-solving, and executive-level advisory skills.

  • Ability to manage multiple complex priorities in a dynamic business environment.

Preferred

  • Master''s degree in Taxation, Accounting, Finance, or a related field.

  • Experience supporting a large, multi-entity organization with geographically dispersed operations.

  • Exposure to complex corporate financing structures and treasury operations.

  • Experience advising senior executives and business leaders on significant tax and financial matters.
