Senior CMDB Cloud & Discovery Engineer
We are the Configuration Management Database (CMDB) Team, responsible for providing a trusted, connected view of technology assets and services across the enterprise. Our mission is to strengthen governance, discovery, and integration while expanding the CMDB's ability to represent an increasingly complex technology landscape spanning on-premises infrastructure, cloud platforms, applications, endpoints, and emerging technologies.
As Vanguard continues to expand its use of AWS and Azure, the CMDB Team is looking for a Senior CMDB Cloud & Discovery Engineer who can bridge cloud engineering, architecture, and ServiceNow Discovery. This is an opportunity to help shape how cloud infrastructure is discovered, modeled, governed, and connected across the enterprise while advancing the CMDB as a foundation for technology operations, security, resiliency, and automation.

As a Senior CMDB Cloud & Discovery Engineer, you will provide technical leadership across our cloud and infrastructure discovery capabilities, with a particular focus on AWS, Azure, and ServiceNow Discovery.
You will work closely with cloud platform teams, infrastructure engineering, architecture, security, ServiceNow platform teams, and application stakeholders to improve how technology assets are identified, discovered, modeled, and maintained within the CMDB.
The role goes beyond administering discovery tooling. You will apply cloud architecture and engineering expertise to understand complex AWS and Azure environments, evaluate how resources and relationships should be represented within ServiceNow, identify discovery and data gaps, and engineer scalable solutions that improve the accuracy and completeness of enterprise technology inventory.
You will also help establish the next generation of the team's discovery capabilities. This includes expanding cloud coverage, strengthening automated relationship mapping, integrating new authoritative data sources, improving discovery architecture, and identifying opportunities to apply automation and AI to reduce manual CMDB maintenance.
This position offers broad exposure across Vanguard's technology organization and the opportunity to influence how cloud and infrastructure intelligence is captured and governed at enterprise scale.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide technical leadership for ServiceNow Discovery and cloud discovery architecture, with an emphasis on AWS and Azure.
- Design and enhance discovery solutions that identify cloud resources, infrastructure components, and their relationships within the CMDB.
- Apply AWS and Azure architectural knowledge to evaluate resource hierarchies, services, networking, identity, tagging, relationships, and lifecycle considerations.
- Partner with cloud and architecture teams to translate evolving cloud designs into scalable CMDB discovery and data-model strategies.
- Evaluate and improve existing ServiceNow Discovery patterns, schedules, credentials, MID Server architecture, integrations, and supporting infrastructure.
- Troubleshoot complex discovery issues across ServiceNow, cloud platforms, networks, authentication systems, APIs, and infrastructure.
- Identify discovery gaps and develop technical approaches for improving coverage, accuracy, reconciliation, normalization, and relationship mapping.
- Design integrations with cloud platforms and other authoritative enterprise data sources using ServiceNow Discovery, Service Graph Connectors, APIs, and event-driven approaches where appropriate.
- Help establish architectural patterns for onboarding new infrastructure and cloud technologies into the CMDB.
- Partner with CMDB governance and platform teams to ensure discovered data aligns with established CMDB/CSDM models, identification and reconciliation rules, lifecycle standards, and data-quality expectations.
- Develop automation that reduces manual CMDB maintenance and improves the timeliness and reliability of infrastructure data.
- Support technical experimentation involving AI, intelligent automation, and emerging ServiceNow capabilities that can improve discovery and CMDB operations.
- Create and maintain technical documentation, architecture diagrams, standards, and operational procedures.
- Mentor and cross-train CMDB engineers, helping expand the team's cloud engineering and architectural capabilities.
Additional Pre-Qualifications / Skills Preferred
Cloud Engineering & Architecture
- Strong hands-on experience with AWS and/or Microsoft Azure, with experience across both platforms strongly preferred.
- Demonstrated understanding of cloud architecture including:
- Compute and virtual infrastructure
- Networking and connectivity
- Identity and access management
- Resource hierarchy and organization
- Tags and cloud metadata
- APIs and event-driven services
- Cloud resource lifecycle management
- Experience designing or supporting enterprise-scale cloud environments.
- AWS Solutions Architect, AWS SysOps, Azure Administrator, Azure Solutions Architect, or comparable cloud certification preferred.
ServiceNow / Discovery
- Experience with ServiceNow Discovery, CMDB, ITOM, or Service Graph Connectors strongly preferred.
- Understanding of discovery concepts including MID Servers, credentials, patterns, schedules, cloud APIs, Identification and Reconciliation Engine (IRE), and CMDB relationships.
- Experience troubleshooting discovery across complex hybrid infrastructure environments.
- Familiarity with CSDM and ServiceNow CMDB data-modeling practices preferred.
Engineering & Automation
- Strong scripting, development, or automation acumen.
- Experience with one or more of:
- Python
- JavaScript
- PowerShell
- REST APIs / JSON
- Infrastructure as Code such as Terraform or CloudFormation
- Experience with CI/CD, source control, automated testing, or infrastructure automation is beneficial.
Architecture & Technical Leadership
- Ability to translate complex infrastructure and cloud architectures into scalable discovery and data-model solutions.
- Strong technical problem-solving and root-cause analysis skills.
- Ability to evaluate current-state implementations and recommend pragmatic future-state architecture.
- Experience partnering across cloud engineering, infrastructure, security, architecture, and platform teams.
- Ability to communicate complex technical concepts to both engineering and non-technical stakeholders.
