Job Description
We are seeking a Temporary Systems Engineer to join our dynamic team supporting research data collection environments. The ideal candidate will have strong experience in multi-OS troubleshooting, basic networking, and scripting and a proven ability to maintain stable capture operations, resolve issues quickly, and improve operational processes.
Responsibilities:
- Support capture operations through hardware and software troubleshooting, root cause analysis, cross-functional collaboration, process improvement, and engineering enhancements.
- Troubleshoot and resolve issues across Linux, Windows, and macOS using terminal and CLI tools with standard diagnostics.
- Perform basic network debugging and triage, including connectivity, DNS, DHCP, and routing fundamentals; support common network protocols.
- Develop and maintain lightweight automation and scripts in bash and/or Python to improve reliability and operational efficiency.
- Support and maintain systems used in onsite user study environments, coordinating with internal stakeholders to ensure session readiness.
- Follow established data handling, participant privacy, and operational protocols for user study environments.
- Document procedures, common issues, and fixes; update SOPs as issues are resolved or processes change.
- Provide operational support for camera and optical systems, lighting, audio systems, and AV equipment (e.g., RME, Blackmagic, AVB); assist in capture-stage or VR hardware environments as needed.
- Support multiple concurrent data collection projects and prioritize across disciplines.
- Coordinate with researchers, engineers, and non-technical stakeholders to maintain smooth operations.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
- Adherence to data handling and participant privacy protocols for user study environments.
- Linux, Windows, and macOS troubleshooting with terminal and CLI utilities.
- Computer network protocol knowledge and basic network debugging skills.
- Scripting ability in bash and/or Python for maintenance and light automation.
- Strong communication and teamwork skills; effective collaboration with cross-functional and non-engineering partners.
- 2+ years of experience in hardware troubleshooting, data collection operations, software scripting, and on-site lab support for complex R&D capture systems.
Preferred Skills:
- Experience with camera and optical systems, lighting, audio systems, or AV equipment (RME, Blackmagic, AVB).
- Ability to build scripts and tools from scratch.
- Prior work with capture stage environments or VR hardware.
- Strong documentation and process improvement discipline.
- Root cause analysis experience in large-scale hardware and software systems.
