Summary

About StructureIQ

StructureIQ is an early-stage, AI-powered structural health monitoring (SHM) company based in Champaign, commercializing technology exclusively licensed from the University of Illinois. Our Sentinel AI platform, combined with our wireless Xnode IoT sensor hardware, delivers continuous structural risk assessment and Structural Condition Index (SCI) scoring to the insurance industry and asset owners worldwide.

The Opportunity

This research-based position will involve working closely with the StructureIQ team to develop and update structural models, analyze structural behavior, and run simulations as part of our SHM solution for civil infrastructure including buildings, bridges, and industrial facilities. The objective is to develop an actionable strategy for assigning condition ratings to structures based on the developed models and live monitoring data. This includes analyzing pre- and post-event (e.g., earthquakes, storms, floods) sensor data, as well as long-term deterioration trends for different structures. The intern will work towards developing data workflows that quantify structural degradation and translate it into a meaningful condition rating.

Responsibilities
Analyze SHM datasets to develop structural condition rating criteria

Design and implement a workflow for structural condition assessment using sensor data

Create finite element models of structures using STAAD, SAP2000, or similar software

Perform model updating by integrating FE tools with Python or MATLAB scripting

Leverage simulated and real-world data to classify structural health states and degradation levels

Contribute to publications and technical documentation on data-driven SHM methods

Qualifications
Currently enrolled in a Master's or Ph.D. program in Civil Engineering or a closely related field

Strong understanding of structural analysis, model updating, and condition assessment

Hands-on experience with commercial FE software, proficiency with CAD tools and design drawings

Familiarity with analysis methods for damage identification, structural rating, or forensic evaluation

Prior research or industry experience in SHM, structural reliability, or data-driven infrastructure safety assessment is strongly preferred

What We Offer
Paid part-time or full-time internship with a competitive hourly rate

Direct exposure to cutting-edge structural engineering R&D at a deep-tech startup

Mentorship from experienced engineers and access to a talented, multidisciplinary founding team

Opportunity to contribute to a product that will be deployed in real-world infrastructure monitoring applications

Flexible working hours, start and end dates to accommodate your academic schedule

Location and Duration
This internship is based in Champaign. We anticipate a June 2026 start date, with the internship running through August 2026 and potentially continuing into the fall semester on a part-time basis.
