Role Overview
As part of the Communications Engineering team, the Communications Systems Design Specialist is responsible for the architecture, engineering, design, implementation, operation, maintenance, regulatory compliance, and ongoing reliability of RF communication systems, leased line services, circuits, and field communications infrastructure. This includes support systems such as DC power systems, generator backup power, and environmental support systems across various telecommunications platforms.
In coordination with other departmental teams, the specialist provides technical support for Field Area Network (FAN) deployments and assists with the ongoing maintenance and operation of in-service assets. The team also maintains network and communications documentation within the company s document management system, manages communications service requests, and maps network transport assets using the Geographic Information System (GIS).
The role focuses on delivering high-performance, highly available, and cost-effective solutions that meet both technical and business requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Participate in the installation and upgrade of communications technologies to ensure proper implementation of network and computing architecture solutions.
- Support operational performance and maintenance of existing network circuits, as well as the design and delivery of new products and enhancements.
- Ensure compliance with technical standards, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
- Maintain project scope, schedule, and budget for assigned initiatives.
- Take ownership of assigned tasks and coordinate with internal and external stakeholders to ensure successful project delivery.
- Maintain functional knowledge of evolving technologies and their alignment with emerging business needs.
- Produce administrative and technical documentation using Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio, Adobe Acrobat, and related tools.
- AutoCAD and drafting skills are not required but are considered a plus.
- Advanced responsibilities include authoring, editing, and managing departmental policies, standards, procedures, guidelines, drawings, and related documentation.
- Demonstrate proficiency in document management principles, including version control, approvals, regulatory compliance, and use of document management tools.
Principal Accountabilities
- Support Communications Engineering initiatives delivering voice, video, and computing services to employees, contractors, and business partners.
- Ensure high reliability and availability of communications systems.
- Collaborate across FirstEnergy as part of the Network Engineering & Operations (NEO) department to meet business objectives.
- Ensure proper adherence to change management procedures.
- Demonstrate ownership and proficiency in process documentation creation and management.
- Support communications work related to the Long-Term Infrastructure Improvement Plan (LTIIP).
Requirements
- Bachelor s or Associate s degree in Networking, Electrical Engineering, Engineering Technology, Telecommunications, or a related field, or equivalent relevant work experience.
Preferred Knowledge & Experience
- Basic knowledge of test equipment (DMMs, antenna analyzers, spectrum analyzers, RF wattmeters).
- Network circuit design, platform administration, and support experience.
- Circuit engineering and infrastructure support for data transport over wireless or fiber (RTUs, routers, switches, reclosers).
- In-building cellular signal boosters and network extenders.
- Environmental support systems (HVAC, AC/DC power systems, batteries, generators).
- Circuit inventory and telecommunications expense management systems.
- Strong interpersonal, written, verbal, presentation, and drafting skills (Visio/CAD/GIS).
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio, Adobe Acrobat, and other documentation tools.
- Experience with document management systems such as FileNet Content Navigator or similar platforms.
- Circuit design and drawing management tools.
- Tools for monitoring, controlling, and tracking circuit performance.
- Project management concepts and tools.
- Telephony systems (PBX, key systems, consoles, ACD).
- SCADA systems and Remote Terminal Units (RTUs).
