Software Guidance & Assistance, Inc. (SGA) is searching for a Life Insurance Underwriter (Part-Time Consultant approx. 20 hours/week) for a CONTRACT assignment with one of our premier Insurance clients. This role is 100% remote.
This position supports a highly specialized underwriting organization seeking experienced, plug-and-play talent to provide flexible capacity during peak periods, backfill coverage, and ongoing transformation initiatives. The ideal candidate will be a seasoned life insurance underwriter capable of independently assessing risk and making sound underwriting decisions with minimal ramp-up.
Responsibilities:
- Perform end-to-end life insurance underwriting, including risk assessment, case evaluation, and decisioning
- Review and interpret medical records (APS), lab results, and other underwriting documentation
- Assess mortality risk and apply underwriting guidelines to determine eligibility and pricing
- Handle a caseload independently with minimal supervision
- Provide flexible support across underwriting teams based on business needs
- Assist with backlog reduction and capacity coverage during peak periods (e.g., PTO, year-end surge)
- Collaborate with underwriting leadership as needed without requiring heavy field relationship management
Required Skills:
- 10+ years of life insurance underwriting experience (mandatory)
- Experience working with direct life insurance carriers (e.g., New York Life, MassMutual, Prudential, Guardian, etc.)
- Strong expertise in mortality risk assessment and decision-making
- Proven ability to review full medical records (APS) and make independent underwriting decisions
- High level of underwriting authority and experience handling complex cases
- Strong communication skills and ability to operate effectively in a remote environment
- Technologically proficient and adaptable to different underwriting systems and workflows
Preferred Skills:
- Recent underwriting experience within the last 1-2 years
- Prior experience as a senior or consultant-level underwriter
- Background supporting multiple product lines or working across teams
- Experience in reinsurance underwriting environments
- Recent retiree or semi-retired professional seeking part-time consulting work
