Level 2 Cable TechnicianJob SummaryThe Level 2 Cable Technician is an intermediate-level role responsible for installing, terminating, testing, and troubleshooting copper and fiber-optic cabling systems across commercial, industrial, and data center environments. This position requires strong hands-on fiber expertise, the ability to work independently, and strict adherence to industry standards, safety practices, and project documentation requirements.
Key ResponsibilitiesCabling Installation (Copper & Fiber)- Install, route, secure, and label structured cabling systems, including:
- Copper: Cat5e, Cat6, Cat6A
- Fiber: Single-mode (OS2) and multi-mode (OM3/OM4)
- Perform fiber terminations using mechanical, fusion splicing, and pre-terminated solutions
- Install, dress, and maintain:
- Fiber enclosures, splice trays, patch panels, cassettes, and LIUs
- Build and cable equipment racks, cabinets, ladder racks, and pathway systems
- Ensure proper bend radius, cable management, and grounding standards
Fiber Optic Testing & Troubleshooting- Test and certify fiber optic links using:
- Light source and power meter
- OTDR
- Fiber inspection scopes
- Perform continuity, polarity, loss, and reflectance testing
- Troubleshoot issues such as high loss, breaks, contamination, and connector faults
- Clean and inspect all fiber connections following best practices
Copper Testing & Troubleshooting- Test and certify copper cabling using industry-approved tools (e.g., Fluke testers)
- Identify, diagnose, and repair cabling faults, terminations, and pathway issues
Documentation & Quality Control- Label cables and ports according to project and customer standards
- Document fiber strands, patching, and test results; maintain accurate as-built drawings
- Ensure compliance with TIA/EIA, BICSI, and customer specifications
Collaboration & Support- Work independently or alongside Level 1 technicians and project leads
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior technicians
- Support network cutovers, data center migrations, and maintenance windows
Required QualificationsTechnical Experience- 2-5 years of structured cabling experience with strong fiber optic expertise
- Proven experience with fiber termination, splicing, and testing
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, riser diagrams, and fiber schematics
- Experience in data center, carrier, or enterprise environments preferred
Tools & Equipment- Hands-on experience with:
- Fusion splicers, cleavers, OTDRs, power meters, certification testers
- Proficient with hand tools, cable-pulling equipment, ladders, and lifts
Physical & Work Requirements- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs
- Comfortable working in ceilings, raised floors, and confined spaces
- Willingness to work nights, weekends, and on-call hours as needed
Skills- Fiber optic installation and splicing
- Copper cabling (Cat5e, Cat6, Cat6A)
- Rack and stack
- Punchdown and terminations
- Patch panels and switch connectivity
- Troubleshooting and testing (Fluke)
- Blueprint and schematic interpretation
- Data center construction practices
- Knowledge of TIA/EIA and BICSI standards
Preferred Certifications (Not required)- BICSI Installer 2 (Copper or Fiber)
- ETA Fiber Optic Technician (FOT)
- FOA CFOT (or equivalent)
- OSHA 10 or OSHA 30
- Manufacturer-specific cabling or fiber certifications

Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $25.00 - $28.00/hr.
