Engineering Manager in Office Files and Identity

Overview

The Office Files and Identity (FIO) Team drives collaboration, cloud cloud file experience and growth for Office. We deliver the platform and collaboration experiences so that our customers can work together with others, in real-time, on any device. We drive these experiences in apps like Office, Edge, Teams and OneDrive. We work with Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and the rest of Office to deliver performant and always-available access to your documents in the cloud. We modernize the collaboration experience with intelligent clients and services, and we are on the front lines of enabling Copilot for Office. We are looking for an experienced Engineering Manager in Office Files and Identity who can represent at the technical level and support the growth of the team.

We want you to help us deliver an excellent cloud experience to our customers. We will continue to modernize core Word, Excel and PowerPoint workflows and remove friction. We will continue to use data to understand where opportunities exist. And we will continue to be grounded in data-based business metrics: increased customer satisfaction and cloud usage. As an Office Files and Identity engineer, you will:

Our tech portfolio spans the Microsoft client coauthoring and collaboration stacks, the core Office storage stack, cloud file user experience and more. As an FIO engineering manager, you will:

• Drive design and steward the code that the team ships. You will architect and deliver feature areas, shape the workstreams behind performance and reliability improvements.
• Work across organizations and directly with partners both in Office and across Microsoft, including other engineers and product leaders.
• You will use data as the basis for decision making, whether that's in making product design decisions or keeping the product running well.
• Be a steward of products that ship to hundreds of millions of customers around the world, staying connected to customers through data and feedback and being agile and responsive to issues.
• Support and grow your team members through career and technical mentoring.
• Grow the Office Files and Identity(FIO) team by driving initiatives that bring the team together as engineers and colleagues.
• Grow as an engineering manager in a modern and highly-impactful team.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

• Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 8+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
  • OR equivalent experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Master's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 12+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
  • OR Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 15+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
  • OR equivalent experience.
• 6+ years people management experience.

• 5 or more years of management experience.
• 4+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java or Rust.
• Track record of building and shipping complex systems with high quality, performance and in cross-platform configurations.
• Passion for driving customer experiences end-to-end.
• Shipping cross-platform client applications.
• Strong partner communication skills.
• Experience with identity and collaborative productivity applications
• Deep platform-specific expertise building Windows, MacOS, iOS or Android applications.
• Designing and implementing efficient network communications, including network protocols, performance and reliability tooling, modeling and implementing complex customer scenarios across network services.
• Designing and implementing client storage stacks, obsessing with correctness, robustness, resiliency, performance, and flexibility to new scenarios. Understanding of client file system design and APIs, advanced performance optimizations.
• Implementing large data pipelines for collecting, analyzing and displaying complex product usage data. Evolving the data system as business and technical needs change.
• Cross-platform UX expertise in native applications with React Native or ReactJS.

Software Engineering M6 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $163,000 - $296,400 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $220,800 - $331,200 per year.
