SENIOR ASSOCIATE CIVIL ENGINEER for a
FULL TIME assignment with one of our premier
UTILITY clients in
SAN JOSE, CA .
Key Functions and Responsibilities
- Champion safe design practices by applying established safety procedures, regulatory requirements, and industry standards throughout project development.
- Develop civil plans, technical specifications, quantities, and cost opinions for capital construction projects, with oversight from senior engineering staff.
- Conduct site visits, engineering evaluations, and data analysis to support decisions related to grading, drainage, access, foundations, and other civil elements.
- Evaluate in-house and consultant-prepared designs to ensure accuracy, constructability, regulatory compliance, and adherence to internal standards.
- Assist with entitlement and permitting efforts by coordinating with local, regional, and state agencies responsible for planning, environmental review, and right-of-way approvals.
- Work collaboratively with operations, construction, and maintenance teams to incorporate field conditions and operational considerations into design documents.
- Provide engineering support during construction, including responding to RFIs, reviewing submittals, and addressing design-related issues that arise in the field.
- Support documentation and workflow improvements by helping maintain standard details, drawing templates, and CAD and document control practices.
- Participate in peer reviews, constructability assessments, and value-focused design reviews to enhance safety, lifecycle performance, and cost efficiency.
- Offer technical mentorship and informal guidance to less experienced engineers and technical staff.
- Proactively identify process improvements that enhance design efficiency, reduce approval timelines, and improve overall project outcomes.
Knowledge, Skills, and Competencies
- Solid understanding of civil engineering concepts related to facility and site development, including earthwork, surface drainage, access design, and foundations.
- General knowledge of construction practices, utility coordination, and permitting processes for public infrastructure projects.
- Proficiency with AutoCAD, Bluebeam, Microsoft Office, and related engineering and document management tools.
- Working familiarity with codes, regulations, and standards applicable to public water infrastructure and site development (e.g., environmental review, utility regulations, industry design standards).
- Strong analytical and organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet project deadlines.
- Clear verbal and written communication skills for internal collaboration and coordination with consultants and public agencies.
- Demonstrated initiative, accountability, and interest in continuous professional and process improvement.
Education and Experience Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a closely related discipline from an accredited institution.
- Active California Professional Civil Engineer (PE) license.
- At least five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in civil or facilities-related infrastructure design, or a combination of prior associate-level experience within a facilities-focused engineering group.
- Prior involvement in developing construction plans, technical specifications, and coordinating with contractors, consultants, and permitting agencies is highly preferred.
- Experience delivering capital improvement projects within a public agency, utility, or similarly regulated environment is a plus.
- Candidates with civil engineering backgrounds in land development or site infrastructure are encouraged to apply.
