In 1949, as Diners Club tells it, Frank McNamara finished dinner in Manhattan and found his wallet at home in another suit. His wife came down and paid. He returned to the same table the following February and settled the bill with a piece of cardboard, honored at twenty-seven restaurants and carried by two hundred people, most of them his friends. A year later there were 42,000. McNamara solved two problems at once. Acceptance: enough restaurants to make the card worth carrying, and enough dine

At its height, the Venetian Arsenal could produce ships at a speed that were mostly unmatched in its era. Its advantage was not simply that its craftspeople worked faster. Venice standardized the pieces around them. Parts, processes, and responsibilities became reusable enough that shipbuilding became stamp and repeat, not creating from scratch every time. Mercury's services ecosystem is reaching a similar transition. As more of Mercury moves beyond our core Haskell monolith, product teams are

Roman aqueducts quietly carried water across cities and made daily life possible. Their value was not in the structures themselves, but in everything they enabled. The Bank Accounts team plays a similar role at Mercury. We build the foundation for depository accounts*: managing money held in Mercury accounts and helping customers move money between accounts they own. The work ahead is especially exciting: as Mercury is opening its own bank, this team will build a major part of the foundation ne

When Apple developed the original Macintosh, the team wasn't simply designing a new computer. They were establishing a new vocabulary for interacting with one: windows, menus, icons, pointing, dragging, selecting. Many of those ideas existed elsewhere, but the achievement was turning them into a coherent language that people could understand and carry from one application to another. We're at another interesting moment in the evolution of interfaces. Software can increasingly understand intent,

Our forebears found wisdom in the rhythm of tides and the migration patterns of birds, reading nature's encyclopedia with practiced eyes, while today's explorers navigate through infinite digital corridors and virtual landscapes that exist only in servers. Now our fingertips dance across surfaces that pulse with invisible electricity-screens that transform abstract data into living, breathing insights. In Renaissance Florence, wealthy merchants faced a dilemma: where could they safely store their gold without it sitting idle. The Medici family offered a radical alternative. They invited individuals to deposit their gold and other assets with their institution, promising not only secure storage but also active deployment in trade and finance and accessible when needed. In 1989, Tim Berners-Lee wrote a proposal for CERN. CERN lost knowledge when people left, because its information was in many systems that did not connect. Teams, models, and AI agents need data that they can find, understand, and trust. We are building an AI-native data platform that enables Mercury to have reliable analytics

In 1931, electrical draftsman Harry Beck looked at London's Underground map and saw a system that had become too complicated to understand. The maps at the time tried to represent the city geographically. Beck realized that wasn't what riders actually needed. What mattered was how the system connected: which lines went where, where you could transfer, and the simplest way to get from one place to another. So he redrew the network around those relationships instead. His design became the foundat
