COBOL Lead

Key Responsibilities
Lead, enhance, and support iSeries (AS400) applications in a business?critical production environment
Serve as the primary onshore lead, coordinating closely with offshore teams and business stakeholders
Actively participate in stakeholder discussions, requirement grooming sessions, and solution walkthroughs
Represent the offshore team in onshore calls, governance meetings, release planning, and escalations
Translate business requirements into clear technical designs and execution plans for offshore teams
Ensure effective onshore?offshore coordination for development, testing, and production support activities
Own incident, problem, and change management activities while ensuring SLA adherence
Perform impact analysis, solution reviews, and effort estimations for enhancements and fixes
Mentor team members and ensure proper documentation, knowledge transfer, and delivery quality
Leverage AI tools and platforms to improve productivity, code analysis, defect resolution, documentation, and operational efficiency

Technical Skills (Mandatory)
iSeries / AS400 Technologies
Strong expertise on IBM i (iSeries / AS400) platform
Proficiency in COBOL
Strong working experience in:
RPG / RPGLE
CL / CLLE
ILE concepts
Hands-on experience with batch and online programs
Knowledge of job queues, subsystems, message handling, and system operations

Database
Strong experience with DB2 on iSeries
Expertise in:
Embedded SQL in COBOL / RPG
Query optimization and performance tuning
Database design and impact analysis

Application Support & SDLC
Experience in application maintenance and production support
Strong understanding of SDLC, ITIL processes, and release management
Ability to analyze complex legacy codebases and troubleshoot production issues effectively

AI & Productivity (Must Have)
Demonstrated effective usage of AI tools (e.g., Copilot, GenAI tools, code assistants) for:
Code analysis and understanding legacy systems
Impact analysis and faster defect resolution
Documentation and knowledge extraction
Productivity and quality improvements

Functional & Leadership Skills
Strong client?facing communication and presentation skills
Proven experience working in global onshore?offshore delivery models
Ability to manage priorities, dependencies, and delivery risks
Experience in status reporting, stakeholder updates, and escalation management
Ownership mindset with strong collaboration and leadership abilities

Good to Have / Domain Experience
PBM (Pharmacy Benefit Management) domain knowledge is a strong plus
Experience working in healthcare or insurance domains
Exposure to legacy modernization initiatives
Familiarity with Agile / Scrum / SAFe delivery methodologies
Prior experience as Module Lead / Offshore Lead / SME
