Overview

Database Administrator 2 personnel support the planning, development, maintenance, monitoring, and security of integrated database systems. They work with developers, analysts, and stakeholders to ensure new applications and changes meet structural parameters, data integrity, performance, and accessibility requirements. Workers operate with limited supervision, exercise independent judgment, and must protect the security and integrity of critical infrastructure systems while complying with relevant laws and regulations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support installation of database software and perform migrations to new data management system software levels; test migrations to ensure data reliability and functionality.
  • Analyze, design, modify, and maintain database structures.
  • Design and implement procedures to save, retrieve, and recover databases from hardware and software failures.
  • Establish and implement database security controls and user access levels.
  • Evaluate and recommend database software packages for potential acquisition.
  • Prepare and maintain database documentation, procedures, and data dictionary definitions.
  • Perform logical and physical data modeling, design relational database models, and create physical models from logical models.
  • Monitor database performance and implement efficiency improvements (performance tuning).
  • Assist in modifying existing databases and database management systems.
  • Assist in development of standards, guidelines, policies, and procedures to preserve database environment integrity.
  • Enter codes to create production databases and run utility programs to monitor database performance (distribution of records, memory usage).
  • Direct programmers and analysts to make changes to the DBMS, review/correct programs, and answer user questions.
  • Coordinate changes with coworkers to determine impacts on other systems and cost implications.
  • Load databases, reorganize as needed, and create test database environments (libraries and procedures) for application teams.
  • Perform security recovery procedures and assist with disaster recovery monitoring and testing.
  • Provide technical assistance evaluating user requests for new data elements and systems and integrate them into the shared data environment.
  • Assist with benchmarking, threshold testing, and selection of DBMS software.
  • Ensure user interfaces for database administration, input, view, and reporting comply with EIR Accessibility standards and provide support when accessibility issues arise.
  • Support users in obtaining data/information where accessibility issues affect access.

Experience and Qualifications

Minimum Requirements (Required)

  • 4-7 years of experience in the field or a related area.
  • Strong knowledge of database management systems and familiarity with data warehouse management and decision support tools.
  • Extensive experience in development, implementation, and maintenance of data warehouses and data marts (desired).
  • Experience with BusinessObjects and building/maintaining data dictionaries.
  • Ability to use database access tools for application delivery.
  • Strong familiarity with analysis, planning, and management reporting functions.
  • Well-developed oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong teamwork and interpersonal skills.
  • Extremely high analytical ability to solve unusual and difficult problems.
  • Understanding of benchmarking processes and techniques.
  • Very high interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively, motivate others, and elicit work output.
  • Experience with data population and data modeling techniques for targets such as Star Schemas, Snowflake Schemas, and normalized models.
  • Experience with GUI-based ETL tools (Informatica, IBM WebSphere DataStage, or similar).
  • Implementation experience with enterprise-class databases (Teradata, Oracle, SQL Server, or similar).
  • Implementation experience with analytical and reporting tools (Business Objects, Cognos, Hyperion, MicroStrategy, or similar).
  • Experience across the data warehouse implementation process: business requirements, logical modeling, physical database design, data sourcing/transformation, loading, SQL, and end-user tools.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, teamwork, and communication skills.
  • Proven ability to work with technical and non-technical groups and manage multiple responsibilities.

Preferred

  • Oracle Database experience.
  • SSRS report creation.
  • M204 database experience.
