Job Title: Senior Substation Electrical Engineer I
Role Overview
We are seeking an analytical, technical, and organized Senior Substation Electrical Engineer I to lead electrical engineering design and project execution activities for high-voltage power infrastructure. In this role, you will develop preliminary scopes of work, lead multi-stakeholder pre-engineering job walks, manage prime engineering contractors, and oversee in-house design projects from concept to completion.
This is a critical infrastructure engineering role for a professional who bridges technical design, project controls, and cross-functional collaboration. You will manage equipment procurement, review contractor cost proposals and change orders, provide field engineering support, and ensure strict adherence to safety protocols and NERC compliance standards. Key Responsibilities
Engineering Design & Project Management
Scope Development & Job Walks: Develop preliminary scopes of work and schedule/conduct pre-engineering job walk meetings with cross-functional stakeholders (Construction, Maintenance, Operations, IT, Telecomm, Field Engineering, and Testing).
Documentation & Specifications: Create, approve, and publish pre-engineering job walk meeting minutes, technical design specifications, and updated AutoCAD drawings.
In-House & Contractor Oversight: Manage in-house design projects by providing technical guidance and mentoring to junior engineers; oversee prime engineering contractors to ensure design consistency, quality, and milestone delivery.
Procurement & Financial Control: Order major equipment in a timely manner to meet material want dates; review, evaluate, and approve contractor cost proposals, purchase order requests, change orders, and service sheets.
Technical Support & Compliance
Field Support: Provide expert technical support to field personnel, internal/external stakeholders, and project teams during installation, testing, and commissioning.
Operations & Reliability: Provide engineering support for ongoing operational needs, service reliability initiatives, emergent projects, and regulatory compliance requirements (including NERC standards).
Safety Leadership: Foster and maintain a safety-conscious work environment by leading, influencing, and adhering to rigorous electrical safety protocols and safe work practices.
Qualifications & Requirements
Minimum Qualifications
Education: Bachelor's Degree or higher in Electrical Engineering (or a Bachelor's Degree in a closely related Scientific, Technical, or Mathematical field).
Experience Baseline: Minimum of 2+ years of professional experience in electrical substation engineering and design.
Technical & Software Mastery:
oWorking knowledge of electrical codes, industry standards, guides, and methods governing high-voltage installations.
oHands-on AutoCAD design experience in developing, reviewing, and updating engineering drawings.
oProficiency with design and productivity software (AutoCAD, Bluebeam, Microsoft Office Suite).
Core Competencies: Highly organized with exceptional verbal and written communication skills; proven experience conducting field meetings, facilitating stakeholder discussions, and producing detailed documentation.
Preferred Attributes
5+ years of overall progressive engineering experience in the power utility sector.
Direct technical expertise working with Power Utility Substations ranging from 4kV thru 500kV.
Active Professional Engineer (P.E.) License (specifically in the State of California).
